Final Score: San Jose 2, Colorado 1
Denver, CO (Sports Network) - Marcel Goc scored early in the third period to lift the San Jose Sharks to a 2-1 victory over the Colorado Avalanche at the Pepsi Center.
Joe Thornton tallied his 27th goal of the season while Vesa Toskala made 25 saves for the Sharks, who have won two straight.
The win pulled San Jose into a tie with Vancouver for the eighth playoff spot in the Western Conference with 87 points.
Andrew Brunette scored his 23rd goal of the season for the Avalanche, who have dropped two of their last three overall.
Peter Budaj allowed two goals on 32 shots as Colorado remains in sixth place in the Western Conference playoff race.
Just 2:48 into the third frame, the Sharks went up 2-1 on Goc's eighth goal of the season. From the right side of the net, Patrick Rissmiller threw the puck out in front and from the low slot, Goc's wrister sailed past Budaj high on the stick side.
"I was hoping the puck would be there for me and it was," said Goc. "So I just shot it."
With about 6 1/2 minutes left in the contest, the Avs had a great chance to even the score as Dan Hinote pushed a loose puck in front off the left post before the Sharks cleared the disc out of the zone.
Colorado pulled Budaj with about a minute left in the contest, but were unable to net the equalizer as San Jose did not give up any quality scoring chances.
With 7:36 left in the opening period, the Avalanche went up 1-0 on Brunette's 23rd goal of the season. At the right half-wall, Milan Hejduk slipped the puck down to Brunette at the goal line. Brunette then charged to the net and chipped the disc over Toskala's shoulder on the far side for the tally.
San Jose finally got on the scoreboard with 2:30 left in the second stanza to tie the game at 1-1. Nils Ekman let go a wrister from the right circle that Budaj initially stopped. An uncovered Thornton, though, swept the rebound into the net at the left side of the cage.
