NHL Game Summary - Carolina at Buffalo
(Wednesday, March 22nd)
Final Score: Carolina 4, Buffalo 3
Buffalo, NY (Sports Network) - Justin Williams registered a goal and an assist to help the Carolina Hurricanes defeat the Buffalo Sabres, 4-3, at HSBC Arena.
Kevyn Adams and Anton Babchuk notched a goal apiece and Martin Gerber made 24 saves for Carolina, which snapped a two-game slide. Cory Stillman added his 18th goal of the season for the Hurricanes.
"We'll just fast forward past that (third period) and take the two points," Adams said. "You knew they were going to come out hard. It's not so much what we did, they capitalized on their opportunities. We fought, we could of gone into a shell. We got the two points."
Jason Pominville and Thomas Vanek each scored a goal and Ryan Miller stopped 21 shots for the Sabres, who have lost three straight following an eight-game winning streak. Jiri Novotny notched his second tally of the year for Buffalo.
"To win games you usually have to play 60 minutes," Pominville said. "We didn't do that tonight. Hopefully we can build off our third and turn this thing around."
After a scoreless first period, Carolina struck for four consecutive goals in the second period to establish a commanding lead.
The Hurricanes drew first blood 6:43 into the middle frame after Adams capped a 3-on-1 rush with a one-timer from below the left circle for a 1-0 lead. Carolina extended its lead a little over two minutes later as Stillman snapped a shot from the slot that beat Miller through the five hole for a 2-0 advantage.
The Hurricanes made it 3-0 with 2:57 left in the second stanza when Babchuk beat Miller glove side with a wrist shot from the high slot. Carolina capped the scoring splurge just over a minute later after Williams batted the puck out of midair and over Miller's shoulder for a 4-0 margin.
Buffalo, however, scored three third-period goals to make things interesting down the stretch.
The Sabres got on the scoreboard 2:50 into the final frame as Pominville deflected a shot from the right point past Gerber to make it 4-1. Buffalo cut its deficit in half with 9:04 left after Vanek beat a defender below the left circle and poked a shot through Gerber's five hole to make it 4-2.
Buffalo pulled within one less than two minutes later while shorthanded when Novotny finished a 2-on-1 rush by flipping the puck over Gerber's right pad to make it 4-3.
The Sabres pulled Miller with about a minute left in the contest but did not sustain any pressure on Gerber as Carolina skated away with the win.
