NHL Game Summary - Phoenix at San Jose

(Saturday, April 1st)

Final Score: Phoenix 4, San Jose 3 (OT)

San Jose, CA (Sports Network) - Steven Reinprecht completed his hat trick, scoring 3:55 into overtime as the Phoenix Coyotes downed the San Jose Sharks, 4-3, at the HP Pavilion.

Reinprecht scored a goal on the power play, short-handed and at even strength for the Coyotes, who have won three straight. Curtis Joseph ended with 26 saves for Phoenix, which has captured six of seven.

Jonathan Cheechoo and Scott Hannan had a goal and an assist each for the Sharks, who salvaged a point to move within three of eighth-place Edmonton in the Western Conference playoff race. San Jose has two games in hand on the Oilers.

After surrendering a three-goal lead in the third period, Phoenix salvaged the two points for the win when Reinprecht completed his hat trick by putting home a rebound of a Derek Morris shot from the top of the crease. With San Jose's Matt Carle in the penalty box for interference, the Coyotes took advantage of the 4-on-3 as Reinprecht was all alone to put home the game-winner.

"Right place, right time," said Reinprecht. "I've been going to the net and turning around and the puck's right on my tape and I think you can credit (Fredrik Sjostrom) and (Shane Doan) and the defense for getting pucks to the net and creating a lot."

San Jose netminder Vesa Toskala ended with 32 saves.

Trailing 3-0 after two periods, the Sharks came storming back in the third.

Carle got the first goal of the stanza, depositing a power-play tallying just 2:01 into the frame off assists from Tom Preissing and Cheechoo.

Cheechoo then made it a one-goal game at the 11:46 mark when he took the puck from the right-side boards, skated in on net unguarded and lifted a backhander over Joseph. Joe Thornton didn't get an assist on the play, but deserves credit for creating space when he crashed the net and caused havoc in the crease.

Hannan then tied the game with 3:53 left. Steve Bernier skated around the back of the net and from the left of the crease sent a pass out front to Hannan, who had a wide-open net to knot the contest.

Phoenix started the scoring in the first period when Reinprecht deflected a Keith Ballard shot past Toskala at the 14:53 mark.

Then, after Geoff Sanderson made it a 2-0 game 2:30 into the second with his 24th goal of the season, Reinprecht recorded his shorthanded tally when he came in on a breakaway and wristed home the puck at the 14-minute mark.

"In the first two periods we were a little sloppy," said Toskala. "A couple of breakaways and they had a couple of good scoring chances but I was able to make some good saves and keep us in the game even though we were three goals behind. That's what I always try to do, just give the team a chance to win and I think I did."
