"We've got a chart up of who's playing where, where we are, what happens if this [happens], how many points we can end up with," said Sharks head coach Ron Wilson. "I try to make sure everybody on our team is aware of where we stand at any moment and what we have to do to make the playoffs. Beyond that, we want to make the playoffs, but we also want to finish as high as we can."
Reinhard Divis stopped 23 shots for the Blues, who have lost four straight and five of their last six contests.
"We couldn't get a break on a goal at the right time, and if we do get a goal at the right time, it changes the look of it," Blues head coach Mike Kitchen said. "They're on a mission to get into the playoffs and they came out hard at us."
San Jose drew first blood 4:53 into the opening period after Cheechoo netted his 43rd goal of the season after his wrister beat Divis stick side. The Sharks pushed their lead to 2-0 just over a minute into the middle frame after Bernier swept a rebound past Divis from the doorstep.
The Sharks extended their lead 6:17 into the second period when Bernier skated along the right half wall, got around Blues' defenseman Christian Backman and pushed the puck over the goal line following a one-handed spin in the crease.
San Jose continued to pour it on, scoring three goals in the third period to complete the rout.
McCauley netted a shorthanded goal 11:34 into the third period when his wrister from the left circle beat Divis glove side. Just under two minutes later, Smith batted a rebound past Divis to make it 5-0.
The Sharks capped the scoring with 2:25 left as Ekman beat Divis over the right pad.
