NHL Game Summary - Nashville at Detroit

(Tuesday, March 21st)

Final Score: Nashville 3, Detroit 2 (SO)

Detroit, MI (Sports Network) - Martin Erat registered the deciding shootout tally to lift the Nashville Predators over Detroit, 3-2, at Joe Louis Arena.

Scott Hartnell and Steve Sullivan lit the lamp in regulation while Marek Zidlicky picked up a pair of assists for Nashville, which has won five in a row and seven of its last eight. Goaltender Tomas Vokoun made 39 saves in the victory.

Brendan Shanahan and Robert Lang both scored for the Red Wings, who had a six- game winning streak snapped. Manny Legace was solid in net, stopping 34 shots, but could not contain the Predators in the shootout session.

After the initial four rounds ended in a stalemate, Mike Sillinger gave Nashville the edge with a wrister that rang off the crossbar and in. Steve Yzerman followed with a marker through Vokoun's five-hole to keep the Red Wings alive.

Erat, however, put the Predators up for good, as his shot from straight on sailed over Legace's left shoulder.

"Manny's a great goaltender," said Nashville's Paul Kariya. "You have to put a perfect shot against him because he's got a perfect glove hand."

Shanahan had a chance to even things up once again, but his offering sailed wide to end the game.

"I'm happy with the point, but you'd still like to get two whenever you can," said Red Wings center Jason Williams. "We had some chances late in the third period and again in the overtime. It was a tight-checking game with a playoff atmosphere. A game like this is good for us to get ready for the playoffs."

Hartnell drew first blood for Nashville 5:57 into the contest with his 23rd tally of the season, but the Red Wings quickly struck back with two goals of their own.

The Red Wings were awarded a 5-on-3 advantage midway through the first and cashed in at the 9:34 mark, as Lang gathered a rebound along the left side and roofed it over a fallen Vokoun.

Less than a minute later and with Detroit still on the power play, Henrik Zetterberg fed a charging Shanahan in front, and the left winger punched it in to put his team ahead 2-1.

The Predators responded with a power-play goal with 5:09 remaining in the first, as Sullivan finished a cross-crease pass from Kariya in the left slot to tie the game.

Both offenses were shut down from there, however, sending the game into overtime knotted at 2-2. Nashville had the best chance to win it in regulation after Hartnell was hauled down from behind and was awarded a penalty shot with 5:12 left. He flew into the zone and tried to beat Legace low and left, but the netminder deflected the disc out of harm's way.
