At the 8:06 mark of the period, Zetterberg found a loose puck in front and tapped it past Aebischer on his glove side to give the Red Wings a two-goal cushion.
The Avs pulled their goaltender with about two minutes left, but the move back fired as Brendan Shanahan scored on the empty net to seal it for Detroit.
"This is a home run for us," said Detroit head coach Mike Babcock. "We need to take two weeks off and go in feeling good about ourselves. They've (the players) done some good work and they get a break here. Guys going to the Olympics will be energized when they come back. The other guys who have had a break will be energized. We'll be ready for a good push."
Colorado drew first blood as Patrice Brisebois' ninth tally of the season gave the Avs a 1-0 lead 5:36 into the contest.
Midway through the opening period, the Avalanche went up 2-0 after Milan Hejduk picked up his 16th goal of the season. About three minutes later, the Red Wings got on the board after Schneider's blast from the point beat a screened Legace.
Datsyuk tied the game up at 2-2 at the 6:51 mark of the second stanza.
"We got off to a slow start," said Legace. "I was awful, to be honest with you. I think our team played unbelievable the second and third."
Midway through the middle session, Hinote and Jason Williams exchanged goals for a 3-3 tie heading into the third period.
