NHL Game Summary - Pittsburgh at Washington

(Saturday, February 11th)

Final Score: Pittsburgh 6, Washington 3

Washington, DC (Sports Network) - Mark Recchi and Sergei Gonchar each had a goal and three assists to lead the Pittsburgh Penguins to a 6-3 victory over the Washington Capitals at the MCI Center in the last game for both teams before the Olympic break.

John LeClair had a goal and two assists while Sidney Crosby and Colby Armstrong each added a goal and an assist for the Penguins, who have their first two-game win streak since late December.

Marc-Andre Fleury made 36 saves in the victory for Pittsburgh, which has won four straight contests against Washington.

Matt Pettinger had a goal and an assist while Alexander Ovechkin and Brian Sutherby added goals for the Capitals, who have dropped their past four games.

Olaf Kolzig, who before the game was signed to a two-year contract extension, was torched for six goals on 29 shots in the game.

It was a chippy first period with the teams combining for 48 penalty minutes, including a game misconduct to Washington defenseman Nolan Yonkman. Each team also picked up a fighting major in the opening frame.

Fittingly the Penguins opened up the scoring with a power-play goal. Recchi snapped a wrister from the top of the left circle that a Washington player tried to glove down. But, the disc wound up on the left side of the net where LeClair tried to put it in. The puck stopped at the goal line, but Crosby tapped it in with 1:35 left in the period.

Pittsburgh blew the game open with a four-goal second period.

The Penguins took a 2-0 lead early in the second period. Yonkman had the puck deep in his zone, but LeClair stripped him of it and from in front shelved it over Kolzig's right shoulder just 1:11 in.

A little over three minutes later Armstrong sent a centering pass from the right side that Gonchar one-timed into the net for his seventh goal of the season.

While on the power play, Recchi sent a shot from the high slot that Kolzig made a save on, but Armstrong poked it in from the right side at the 8:21 mark. Recchi added a power-play goal with 5:44 left in the period to complete the burst and make it a 5-0 game.

The Capitals ruined Fleury's shutout bid when Pettinger tapped in a rebound off a Brendan Witt shot to make it a 5-1 game 6:52 into the third.

Pittsburgh regained its five-goal advantage when Eric Boguniecki poked in a rebound less than three minutes after the Washington goal.

Ovechkin netted his 36th goal of the year on a one-timer halfway through the period and Sutherby backhanded a shot from the right side of the net with 31 seconds left to finish up the scoring in the game.
