NHL Game Summary - Colorado at Columbus

(Friday, February 10th)

Final Score: Colorado 4, Columbus 1

Columbus, OH (Sports Network) - Marek Svatos scored twice in the third period to lift the Colorado Avalanche past the Columbus Blue Jackets, 4-1, at Nationwide Arena.

Peter Budaj made 28 saves for the Avalanche, who won for the third straight game. Antti Laaksonen and Brad Richardson also tallied for Colorado.

Jan Hrdina scored the lone goal for the Blue Jackets, who lost for only the second time in their last eight games. Marc Denis allowed three goals on 26 shots in the loss.

After a scoreless second stanza with the game tied at 1-1, Svatos gave the Avalanche the lead just 1:07 into the final frame. On the power play, Brett McLean fired a shot on goal from the slot that Denis stopped. At the right side of the net, Svatos controlled the rebound and stuffed the puck through Denis' five-hole for the goal.

Just 2:51 later, Svatos struck again to give Colorado a two-goal cushion. The rookie forward found a loose puck in front after a Joe Sakic shot from in close, and lifted it just under the crossbar for the 3-1 lead.

With less than a minute to play in the game, Columbus pulled Denis, but Richardson tallied an empty netter to seal it for Colorado.

"It was a real tight game for two periods then they got the early power-play goal and we kind of played on our heels," said Columbus head coach Gerard Gallant. "We had our chances though. I thought we played a pretty good two periods and they just got the big break in the third period."

The Avalanche took a 1-0 lead just eight seconds into the contest. Denis misplayed the puck behind the net on a dump in and Laaksonen stole it and on a wraparound, stuffed the disc into the open net.

"I thought we played a pretty solid game," Denis said. "It seemed like it was one of those games where both teams were waiting for their chance to capitalize. It was just one of those games where the chances were very few and select."

At 10:57 of the opening period, the Blue Jackets tied it up at 1-1 on Hrdina's eighth goal of the season.
