NHL Game Summary - Colorado at Minnesota
(Thursday, February 9th)
Final Score: Colorado 2, Minnesota 1
St. Paul, MN (Sports Network) - David Aebischer made 33 saves to lead the Colorado Avalanche to a 2-1 victory over the Minnesota Wild at Xcel Energy Center.
Brad Richardson and Joe Sakic scored for the Avalanche, who have won their last two games.
Todd White scored and Manny Fernandez made 25 saves for the Wild, who had a three-game winning streak stopped.
The Wild had tied the game up halfway through the third period, but Sakic used his legendary wrister to give the Avalanche the lead.
A turnover at the right circle in the Colorado zone led to Brett Clark getting it, banging it off the boards and into the neutral zone where Sakic picked it up. He took it down the left wing and snapped a laser from the circle that beat Fernandez on the far side to make it a 2-1 game with 5:44 remaining.
Colorado's Rob Blake got called for a penalty with under two minutes to play and Minnesota pulled Fernandez to try to find the equalizer, but was unable to beat Aebischer and Colorado left the building with the win.
"He's playing with confidence and he makes some key saves," said Colorado defenseman Patrice Brisebois. "It gives confidence for the team. I'm happy for him and he works hard."
The first period was a scoreless affair. Minnesota had three power-play opportunities and Colorado had one. Both teams threw 11 shots on net.
The Avalanche made it a 1-0 game early in the middle stanza. Kurt Sauer had the puck high in the slot and sent a shot on net. The disc was going wide right, but Richardson batted it out of the air and into the net just 1:44 in.
Minnesota knotted it up, though, halfway through the final 20 minutes. Nick Schultz sent a blast from the high slot, but his stick blade broke as he made contact with the disc and it flubbed down to the right side of the net. But, White one-timed the disc from low in the right circle for his 18th goal of the season.
