NHL Game Summary - Carolina at Tampa Bay
(Thursday, February 9th)
Final Score: Tampa Bay 5, Carolina 3
Tampa, FL (Sports Network) - Fredrik Modin scored twice to lead the Tampa Bay Lightning to a 5-3 victory over the Carolina Hurricanes in a Southeast Division battle at St. Pete Times Forum.
Evgeny Artyukhin and Vinny Prospal also scored for Tampa Bay, which has won four of its last five games. Brad Richards registered three assists and Ruslan Fedotenko added an empty-net goal in the victory.
Sean Burke allowed three goals on eight shots and was pulled early in the second period for the Lightning, who will visit Boston on Saturday in their final game before the Olympic break. John Grahame stopped all 28 shots he faced in nearly 36 minutes of action for Tampa Bay.
Aaron Ward, Anton Babchuk and Erik Cole each scored for the Hurricanes, who have now dropped two of three on the heels of a five-game winning streak. Carolina plays twice more at home -- against Pittsburgh and Buffalo -- before the league shuts down for several weeks. Martin Gerber allowed four goals on 23 shots for Carolina, which leads the Eastern Conference with 80 points.
With the contest tied 3-3 midway through the third period, the Lightning took the lead for good on Modin's second goal of the night. After a flurry of shots, Gerber was able to keep the puck out until Modin gained control in the low slot. His wrist shot deflected off of Ward and fluttered into the back of the cage at the 10:12 mark. It was the second consecutive Tampa goal that deflected off of a Carolina player.
The visitors produced 14 shots on goal throughout the final session, but Grahame was equal to the task and kept the hosts in front before Fedotenko's 16th goal into the empty cage with 31 seconds remaining sealed the victory.
The Hurricanes took their nickname very seriously in the opening four minutes of this one. They stormed in and scored twice early on for a 2-0 lead. After Ward's goal just 23 seconds after the opening face off, a power-play tally by Babchuk made it 2-0. With Artyukhin in the penalty box for hooking, Justin Williams and Bret Hedican set up Babchuk's fourth goal at the four-minute mark.
Once the Lightning settled down, they answered with a pair of goals to tie it up.
First, at the 10:45 mark, Artyukhin made up for his earlier penalty. He accepted a pass at the blue line, split two Carolina defenders and rifled home a slap shot from the high slot.
Under four minutes later, Modin's 24th goal of the season, this one short- handed, knotted the contest. Richards streaked down the right-wing side and slid a pass from inside the circle over to Modin, who deked to his backhand and beat Gerber with 5:37 to go in the opening stanza.
Cole put the visitors back on top with his 25th goal 4:08 into the second period, but the Lightning once again tied it up less than three minutes later with a power-play marker. After Ward was whistled for a tripping minor, Prospal held control along the goal line to the right of the net and attempted a pass to the other side of the crease. However, the puck deflected off the stick of Hedican and past a surprised Gerber at 6:43.
