NHL Game Summary - Boston at Pittsburgh
(Wednesday, February 8th)
Final Score: Boston 3, Pittsburgh 1
Pittsburgh, PA (Sports Network) - Brad Stuart scored a pair of goals and Tim Thomas came up with 16 saves as the Boston Bruins downed the struggling Pittsburgh Penguins, 3-1, at Mellon Arena.
Travis Green scored the other goal and Glen Murray donated two assists for the Bruins, who have won six of their last nine games.
Tomas Surovy broke up Thomas' shutout late in the third and Eric Boguniecki had the assist for Pittsburgh, which has dropped seven in a row and 17 of its last 18.
Marc-Andre Fleury made 35 saves in the loss.
The teams were locked in a scoreless stalemate for the first 27-plus minutes until Green finally lit the lamp for Boston.
Josh Langfeld got the puck at the point after a Bruins faceoff win and blasted a slapshot that missed its target but kicked right to Green in the left slot. Green went from his backhand to forehand before flipping the disc over a fallen Fleury at the 7:05 mark.
The Bruins doubled their lead with 3:52 to go in the middle frame, as Stuart redirected Brian Leetch's offering with his skate from the side of the net for a power-play tally.
"I thought our team played well. I thought we made clear decisions with the puck. We came out and played with good energy," said Boston head coach Mike Sullivan.
Stuart notched his second power-play goal of the night 6:15 into the final stanza. The defenseman got the puck from Brad Boyes in the right circle and then flicked a wrister on net that made it through traffic in front before slipping through Fleury's five-hole.
Surovy spoiled Thomas' shutout hopes with a point-blank goal with 1:31 remaining. Boguniecki did most of the work during the 2-on-1 sequence, fending off the lone defender as he moved into the zone and then sending an off-balance feed right in front to Surovy, who punched it home.
The Penguins would get no closer, however.
Boston forward Marco Sturm missed the game with an upper-body injury...Prior to the game, the Bruins acquired goaltender Brian Eklund from the Tampa Bay Lightning in exchange for left wing Zdenek Blatny...Boston is 4-0 against Pittsburgh this season and has won seven straight games in the series.
