NHL Game Summary - Washington at Tampa Bay
(Saturday, February 4th)
Final Score: Tampa Bay 5, Washington 0
Tampa, FL (Sports Network) - John Grahame made 29 saves for his fifth shutout of the season to lead the Tampa Bay Lightning to a 5-0 victory over the Washington Capitals at the St. Pete Times Forum.
Brad Richards had two goals and Ruslan Fedotenko added a goal and two assists for the Lightning, who have won two straight and four of their last five games.
"It's focus time. It's time for no mistakes," said Grahame. "We are trying to make a run here and that's our mind frame. We are taking it one game at a time."
Brent Johnson made 32 saves in the loss for the Capitals, who have dropped two of their last three and five of their last seven games.
"There's a flow to the game, but when you take penalties, there is no flow," said Washington head coach Glen Hanlon.
The Lightning got on the board quickly to take a 1-0 lead. Fedotenko brought the puck into the zone and flicked a soft wrister that fooled Johnson and went through his five-hole just 11 seconds in.
"I was surprised. It was the first shift for us," Fedotenko said. "We just tried to throw the puck on net and hopefully go for a rebound or cycle the puck. I took the shot and it just kind of went five-hole. I was surprised, but we'll take it."
Tampa Bay took a 2-0 advantage when Ryan Craig poked the puck in during a scrum in front of the net with 4:14 left in the opening 20 minutes.
The Lightning scored twice late in the second period to hold a commanding 4-0 lead going into the final period.
While killing a penalty, Richards created a turnover in the neutral zone and took the puck into the Washington end. He stretched Johnson out and flipped the disc over his right leg with 4:27 left in the middle stanza.
A little over three minutes later, while on a 5-on-3 power play, Richards sent a shot from the left circle that tipped off a Washington stick and changed the pucks direction just enough to fool Johnson for his 18th goal of the season.
A power play goal from Norman Milley with 3:59 to play completed the scoring in the game.
The Caps will host Florida on Tuesday...The Lightning will visit the New York Islanders on Monday...Lightning center Vincent Lecavalier missed the game with what the team called an upper body injury...Washington went 0-for-5 on the power play...Tampa Bay scored twice in its seven power play opportunities.
