NHL Game Summary - NY Islanders at Pittsburgh

(Saturday, February 4th)

Final Score: NY Islanders 5, Pittsburgh 4 (SO)

Pittsburgh, PA (Sports Network) - Miroslav Satan registered a hat trick and scored in the shootout to lift the New York Islanders past the Pittsburgh Penguins, 5-4, at Mellon Arena.

Trent Hunter also scored in the shootout and Rick DiPietro stopped both shooters he faced for New York, which has won four of its last five games. Chris Campoli notched the other Islanders' goal and DiPietro finished with 40 saves.

Mark Recchi and Richard Jackman tallied a goal and assist apiece and Marc- Andre Fleury stopped 25 shots for Pittsburgh, which has lost five straight and 15 of its last 16 contests. Sidney Crosby and Tomas Surovy also scored for the Pens.

After a scoreless overtime session, Satan started the shootout by beating Fleury with a backhander. DiPietro followed with a glove save on Recchi before Hunter beat Fleury top shelf with a backhander. Michel Ouellet missed the net with his attempt to seal the win for New York.

"This time, we had a shoot out about a week or 10 days ago," Satan said. "I kind of expected the same thing. That's what helped me out on this one."

Tied 3-3 in the third period, New York regained a one-goal advantage with 7:04 left in regulation after Campoli beat Fleury with a wrist shot from inside the left circle to give the Islanders a 4-3 lead.

The Penguins, however, retied the game with 3:31 left in regulation while on the power play after Jackman unleashed a slap shot from the left point that beat DiPietro, who had dropped his stick earlier in the sequence.

New York drew first blood 2:31 into the first period while on the power play after Satan beat Fleury for his 21st tally of the season. Pittsburgh tied the contest midway through the opening frame while on the man advantage after Crosby struck for his 26th goal of the year to make it 1-1.

"We had 44 shots," Crosby said. "Don't know how many we allowed, but we did a pretty good job defensively, especially five-on-five, only gave them power play goals. Got to make sure we are doing better on special teams and killing those off."

The Isles regained the lead with seven minutes left in the first stanza while on the power play after Satan's one-timer from the slot beat Fleury to make it 2-1. Satan completed the natural hat trick after his wrister from the top of the right circle beat Fleury for a power-play tally and a 3-1 lead midway through the second period.

Pittsburgh drew back within one after Tomas Surovy gathered a rebound on the doorstep, switched the puck to his forehand and beat DiPietro glove side for a power-play goal to make it 3-2. The Pens netted the equalizer 5:26 into the third period while on the man advantage after Recchi calmly controlled a loose puck below the left circle and fired it past DiPietro.
