NHL Game Summary - Columbus at Chicago

(Wednesday, March 15th)

Final Score: Chicago 3, Columbus 2

Chicago, IL (Sports Network) - Kyle Calder scored the deciding goal midway through the third period to lift the Chicago Blackhawks over Columbus, 3-2, at the United Center.

Mark Bell and Mark Cullen also lit the lamp while Nikolai Khabibulin made 33 saves -- including a critical penalty shot stop in the second -- to help Chicago win for the first time in four tries.

Rick Nash had a goal and an assist and Jody Shelley also scored for the Blue Jackets, who have lost two in a row. Marc Denis turned away 26 shots in the loss.

"It's two teams that aren't making the playoffs and that's pretty disappointing," Nash said. "I guess you could say we're a rivalry, but we'd rather be playing for the playoffs."

The Blackhawks scored two goals in a 28-second span to assume a 2-0 first- period lead.

Bell got things started at the 8:46 mark, collecting Rene Bourque's rebound in the slot before poking it into the back of the net. Moments later Cullen intercepted a clearing attempt in the Columbus zone, moved in on goal and then fired a shot from between the circles that beat Denis high and right.

The Blue Jackets, though, scored the next two goals to tie the contest.

Dan Fritsche was robbed on a penalty shot try at the 6:06 mark of the second stanza thanks to a sharp glove save from Khabibulin. Shelley, however, lit the lamp less than two minutes later to cut Chicago's lead in half.

Nash knotted the game at 2-2 with just over 12 minutes remaining in the contest, as he used his strength to set up shop in front of the net and then one-timed home a Zherdev feed before being shoved to the ice.

Calder, though, netted the eventual game-winner with 10:05 on the clock. Patrick Sharp maneuvered behind the net and then dished the puck out front to Calder, who faked to the backhand, brought it back to his forehand and then beat a fooled Denis high and left.

Khabibulin kept the Jackets off the board the rest of the way.
