(Wednesday, March 15th)
Final Score: Detroit 3, Anaheim 1
Detroit, MI (Sports Network) - Henrik Zetterberg registered his 34th goal of the season as the Detroit Red Wings defeated the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim, 3-1, at Joe Louis Arena.
Mathieu Schneider also scored and Nicklas Lidstrom assisted on all three goals for Detroit, which has won four straight and six of its last seven games. Kris Draper added an empty-net goal and Chris Osgood made 25 saves for the Red Wings.
Teemu Selanne scored the Ducks' lone goal and Jean-Sebastien Giguere stopped 26 shots for Anaheim, which had a three-game winning streak snapped.
Detroit drew first blood just 60 seconds into the contest when Zetterberg unleashed a wrist shot from the right circle that went off of Giguere's right pad and in for a 1-0 lead.
The Red Wings upped their lead while on a 5-on-3 power play in the opening stanza after Schneider's slap shot from the high slot went through a screen in front and past Giguere to make it a 2-0 game.
Anaheim got back within one while on the power play at the 14:16 mark of the first frame when Selanne one-timed a pass from Scott Niedermayer at the far post past Osgood to make it 2-1.
Detroit sealed the win with 10 seconds left in the final period as Draper collected a loose puck at center ice, skated down the right wing and made a deposit into the empty net.
Detroit captain Steve Yzerman played in his 1,500 career NHL game, becoming just the 10th player to reach that plateau...Selanne has points in each of his last six games and has at least one point in 23 of the last 25 games...Anaheim has allowed just 45 second-period goals, the lowest in the NHL...Detroit improved to 30-0-1 when leading after two periods.
