NHL Game Summary - Philadelphia at Florida

(Wednesday, March 15th)

Final Score: Philadelphia 4, Florida 0

Sunrise, FL (Sports Network) - Robert Esche made 27 saves to record his first shutout of the season as the Philadelphia Flyers defeated the Florida Panthers, 4-0, at the BankAtlantic Center.

Simon Gagne tallied his 39th goal of the season and R.J. Umberger notched a goal and an assist for the Flyers, who halted a two-game skid. Petr Nedved and Jeff Carter also scored a goal apiece for Philadelphia.

"I don't think we needed anybody's best game," Esche said. "We just needed everybody's best effort, collectively and individually. It really did pay dividends in the long run."

Roberto Luongo gave up three goals on 26 shots before being pulled in favor of Jamie McLennan, who made seven stops for Florida, which had its three-game winning streak snapped.

"They established their forecheck early," Former Flyer and current Panther Jon Sim said. "We didn't and we got behind the eight-ball and when you get behind the eight-ball against a team like that it's tough to play catch-up. We didn't create enough offense."

Philadelphia drew first blood 3:38 into the first period after Gagne beat Luongo glove side top shelf with a wrist shot from the right circle.

The Flyers upped their lead 8:53 into the middle frame as Nedved split two defenders at the blue line, skated in on Luongo and beat him stick side with a snap shot for a 2-0 advantage.

Philadelphia continued to pour it on just over six minutes later when Umberger's wrister from the top of the right circle that beat Luongo glove side to make it 3-0.

The Flyers extended their lead to 4-0 at the 13:21 mark of the third period after Carter capped a 2-on-2 rush with a wrist shot from the right circle that beat Luongo glove side for the game's final margin.
