NHL Game Summary - Buffalo at Washington

Final Score: Buffalo 6, Washington 4

Washington, DC (Sports Network) - Ales Kotalik scored the game-winning goal late in the third period to lift the Buffalo Sabres to a 6-4 victory over the Washington Capitals at the Verizon Center.

Daniel Briere scored twice and had two assists for the Sabres, who have won seven games in a row. Ryan Miller turned aside 29 shots and Tim Connolly added a goal and an assist.

Alexander Ovechkin had a goal and two assists for the struggling Capitals, who have lost three in a row and nine of 12. Ben Clymer scored twice and added an assist while Brent Johnson allowed five goals on 40 shots in the loss.

With the game knotted at 4-4, Kotalik put the Sabres ahead scoring with just 1:43 showing on the third period clock. Jochen Hecht controlled the puck behind the Washington net and flipped the puck out to Kotalik in front and he one-timed the feed through Johnson's five hole for the goal.

The Capitals pulled Johnson with a minute left and Maxim Afinogenov sealed it for Buffalo with an empty netter.

The Sabres drew first blood as Connolly scored just 5:31 into the contest.

The Caps responded and tied it on Clymer's 13th goal of the season at the 7:57 mark of the first.

Washington then closed out the opening period with two goals separated by just eight seconds in the final minute.

Ovechkin darted into the Buffalo zone along the left boards and from in close wristed the puck high glove side past Miller for a 2-1 lead with 49 seconds to go. Then off the faceoff, Jeff Halpern drew the puck back to Ivan Majesky and the defenseman fired the disc back up to Halpern, who broke past the Buffalo defense and backhanded the puck past a sliding Miller for a 3-1 lead with only 41 seconds showing on the first period clock.

A power-play tally by Briere 3:52 into the middle session made it a 3-2 game. About two minutes later, Hecht fed a pass to Briere in the slot and he unleashed a wrister that sailed past Johnson into the top left corner of the net for a 3-3 tie.

With 4.9 ticks remaining in the second stanza, the Capitals went up 4-3 on Clymer's second goal of the game. On the power play, Clymer took a feed from Dainius Zubrus in the slot and ripped a slap shot that grazed off the right post and into the net.

With 6:53 left in the final frame, Derek Roy netted a power-play goal to tie the game at 4-4.

Buffalo is 3-1 against Washington this season and has won seven of the last eight meetings overall...The Sabres have also won in four straight trips to Washington...Hecht and Teppo Numminen each had two assists in the win...Buffalo will host Toronto on Thursday...Ovechkin has registered three points seven times this season...The Capitals will visit the NY Rangers on Thursday...The Sabres went 2-for-9 on the power play while the Caps were 2-for-6 with the man advantage.
