NHL Game Summary - Buffalo at NY Islanders
(Saturday, October 29th)
Final Score: Buffalo 6, NY Islanders 4
Uniondale, NY (Sports Network) - Ales Kotalik scored two goals and Jochen Hecht added a goal and two assists as the Buffalo Sabres defeated the New York Islanders, 6-4, at Nassau Coliseum.
Daniel Briere added a goal and an assist, J.P. Dumont and Tim Connolly tallied goals and Martin Biron made 33 saves for the Sabres, who snapped a two-game skid.
Former Sabres Miroslav Satan and Alexei Zhitnik notched goals against their former team and Alexei Yashin and Robert Nilsson scored for the Islanders, who have lost three of their last four contests. Arron Asham recorded two assists for New York.
The Islanders took a 4-3 lead with 13:00 remaining in the third period after Yashin deflected a shot off of his skate past Biron for the goal. Satan won a face off and passed the puck back to Brad Lukowich at the point. Lukowich unleashed a slap shot that ricocheted off Yashin's skate for the advantage.
Buffalo retied the game on the power play just 1:29 later after Briere swept the puck past Snow from the slot. Briere gathered the loose puck after a save by Snow was kicked out of the crease.
"Tonight, with our speed, we created situations where they had to reach for us," Briere said. "They had to take us down. They had to take shots at us where we drew penalties."
The Sabres took a 5-4 lead with 5:06 left after Connolly knocked the puck out of mid-air and into the net for a power-play goal. Maxim Afinogenov took a slap shot from the high slot that deflected off of Snow and high in the air. As three Islanders tried to swipe it away, Connolly snuck his stick behind Snow and batted the puck into the net.
"(Shawn) Bates takes a stupid penalty and sits. Asham takes a stupid penalty and sits. They get the message and they come out playing harder," Islanders coach Steve Stirling said. "One sat 10 (minutes), one sat 15. It puts us in a tough position. You are down to 10 guys, but life is tough. But the two of them responded and they came back. You just can't take the penalties we took and expect to kill penalties."
Buffalo sealed the win after Kotalik flipped the puck past Snow with 1:32 left for the Sabres' fourth power-play goal of the game. Afinogenov blasted a slap shot from the right circle that Snow stopped. But the rebound was kicked free and Kotalik was there to scoop the puck past Snow for the goal.
New York drew first blood just 1:23 into the first period after former-Sabre Satan beat Biron with a slap shot from the right circle for the 1-0 lead. Aaron Asham found Satan with a cross-ice pass and Satan one-timed it past Biron for his eighth goal of the season.
Buffalo tied it just over two minutes later when Dumont knocked the puck past DiPietro. Briere took a slap shot from the point and DiPietro made a chest save. But the puck dropped to his feet and Dumont found it before DiPietro did and he swiftly swept it past him for the goal.
The Islanders regained the lead while on the power play after Zhitnik unleashed a slap shot from the high slot that cleanly beat Biron stick-side high for the 2-1 lead.
The Sabres got the equalizer with 3:55 remaining in the first period while on a 4-on-3 advantage after Kotalik one-timed a slap shot from the top of the left circle through traffic and past DiPietro to make it 2-2.
Buffalo took its first lead of the game just 50 seconds into the second period after Hecht beat DiPietro glove side with a slap shot from the top the left circle. Henrik Tallinder found Hecht with a two-line outlet pass from his own zone to set up the goal that gave the Sabres a 3-2 advantage.
New York tied the game 1:16 into the third period after Nilsson tapped home his first NHL goal. Asham poke-checked the puck away from the Sabres and he hit Nilsson with a pass as he was streaking down the right wing, creating a two-on-one. Nilsson passed the puck to Yashin, who passed it back to Nilsson for the easy tap in and the 3-3 tie.
