NHL Game Summary - NY Islanders at Montreal

(Saturday, October 22nd)

Final Score: Montreal 4, NY Islanders 3

Montreal, QC (Sports Network) - Steve Begin scored with 1:45 left in the third period to lift the Montreal Canadiens over the New York Islanders, 4-3, at Bell Centre.

Saku Koivu, Alex Kovalev, and Christopher Higgins all added goals for the Canadiens, who have won two straight. Jose Theodore made 19 saves in the win.

Miroslav Satan scored a pair of goals and Alexei Yashin also found the back of the net for the Islanders, who had their two-game winning streak snapped. Rick DiPietro stopped 28-of-32 shots in the loss.

With the score tied at two, the Canadiens took the lead in the third period when Higgins took a cross-ice pass in the left circle and fired a shot that beat DiPietro for the goal at the 13:28 mark.

The Islanders would tie the game with 2:53 left in the third when Janne Niinimaa's shot from the left point was redirected by Yashin past Theodore.

However, 1:08 later, Montreal went up for good when DiPietro's clearing attempt was intercepted along the left boards by Radek Bonk, who found Begin in the left circle. Begin then wristed a shot that beat DiPietro glove side.

"When you (have) the lead, you have to keep pushing," said Begin. "We just kept pushing."

The Canadiens scored two power-play goals in the first period for an early lead before New York would tie the game.

"We have given up some leads in the last minutes of games," said Sheldon Souray. "You just can never quit."

Koivu netted the first score at the 8:26 mark. Alexander Perezhogin found Koivu with a pass from the slot and Koivu was able to find the back of the net from the left side of the goal mouth.

Kovalev's power-play tally came at the 13:31 mark after a slap shot from the point lit the lamp for Montreal.

The Islanders would get on the board with 2:17 left in the first period after Satan's power-play goal, which came after the forward slid the puck into the net from the right side of the crease after a nice move on Theodore.

Satan' second power-play goal of the game tied the contest at two with 1:15 left in the second period. The goal came after Satan's slap shot from the right point found the back of the net through traffic.

Satan now has six goals on the season.
