NHL Game Summary - New Jersey at Pittsburgh

(Saturday, March 11th)

Final Score: Pittsburgh 6, New Jersey 3

Pittsburgh, PA (Sports Network) - Sidney Crosby scored two goals, including his 31st of the season, a franchise-record for rookies, and assisted on one as the Pittsburgh Penguins skated past the New Jersey Devils, 6-3, at Mellon Arena.

Newly-acquired Andy Hilbert made a nice impression in his first game as a Penguin, tallying one goal and one assist, while Michel Ouellet also totaled a goal and an assist for the Penguins, who snapped a four-game skid.

Mark-Andre Fleury was solid in goal, stopping 38-of-41 shots.

Jamie Langenbrunner had a goal and an assist and John Madden and Erik Rasmussen added goals for the Devils, who have lost two of their last three games.

It was not a memorable night for Martin Brodeur, who allowed six goals on just 16 shots before being pulled in the second period. Scott Clemmensen entered in goal and stopped all 10 shots he faced.

Crosby opened the scoring just 42 seconds into the game by sliding a shot under Brodeur. Sergei Gonchar backhanded a pass to Crosby who took it on the right wing and beat a sliding Brodeur underneath the netminder's pad.

Just over three minutes later, the Penguins struck again, this time scoring a shorthanded goal as Ryan Malone tallied his 16th of the season. Gonchar flicked a shot towards the net that Crosby redirected on goal. Brodeur made the save, but Malone was there to put home the rebound past a sprawling Brodeur.

The Devils got one back at 10:38 of the first period as Madden made cut the lead in half with his 11th goal of the season. Langenbrunner fired a shot from the top of the right circle. Fleury got his blocker on the shot, but the puck deflected off his blocker and hit a charging Madden and found its way into the net.

The Penguins regained their two-goal lead just 15 seconds later as Ouellet beat Brodeur on a rebound to make it a 3-1 game. Hilbert fired a shot from the left circle that was stopped by Brodeur, however Ouellet was camped out on the doorstep and put the rebound through the five hole of Brodeur.

Hilbert scored his first goal as a Penguin to make it a 4-1 game with 2:14 to go in the first period. Ouellet slid a pass from the left wing to Tomas Surovy on the right wing. He quickly found Hilbert cutting to the net. Hilbert redirected the pass over the right shoulder of Brodeur.

Crosby scored his second goal of the game 3:17 into the second period as he one-timed a shot from the slot that beat Brodeur stickside for a 5-1 lead and just 2:12 later Colby Armstrong made it 6-1 as he redirected a pass from Ray Whitney stickside on Brodeur, who was pulled from the game following the goal.

Rasmussen got one back for the Devils as he took a pass from Paul Martin and wristed it over the right shoulder of Fleury. Langenbrunner scored the lone goal in the third period.
