NHL Game Summary - Tampa Bay at Atlanta
(Thursday, October 20th)
Final Score: Tampa Bay 6, Atlanta 0
Atlanta, GA (Sports Network) - Fredrik Modin scored two goals and John Grahame posted his first shutout of the season as the Tampa Bay Lightning downed the Atlanta Thrashers, 6-0, at Philips Arena.
Grahame stopped all 15 shots he faced while recording his eighth career shutout and Martin St. Louis also scored for the Lightning, who won for the second time in three games.
Vincent Lecavalier added a goal and three assists in the win, giving him 10 points on the season.
"Grahame played great, our defense played great (and) our forwards forechecked very well," said Lecavalier.
Adam Berkhoel stopped 26-of-29 shots in replacement of Michael Garnett, who was pulled from the game after allowing three goals in the first period. The Thrashers have now lost four games in a row and have been outscored 22-2 in that span.
"Right now it's embarrassing," said Scott Mellanby. "We've got to figure out what to do to get better. We can't feel sorry for ourselves."
St. Louis gave Tampa Bay an early lead just 1:25 into the game when he wristed a shot from the right side of the net over Garnett for a power-play goal. It was only St. Louis' second goal of the season after he netted 38 goals during the 2003-04 season.
Ruslan Fedotenko was then awarded a penalty shot 3:37 into the first after he was hooked by Jaroslav Modry en route to the net. However, his low backhander was easily stopped by Garnett, keeping it a one goal game.
The Lightning kept the pressure on though, and netted their second goal 41 seconds later after Lecavalier laced a cross-ice pass from the left circle to Modin, who fired the puck into a wide-open net.
"We felt good tonight," said Lecavalier. "Right from the start we started shooting the puck and went for the net and they went in."
Fedotenko then connected on a wrist shot from the top of the left circle that beat Garnett glove side at the 11:34 mark, staking Tampa Bay to a 3-0 lead. The goal chased Garnett from the game, bringing Berkhoel on in relief.
Garnett stopped only four of the seven shots he faced.
"I just simply got beat on a couple of plays early by a couple of good players," said Garnett.
Modin added a power-play goal from the slot with 6:14 left in the first, capping the Lightning's four-goal first period and Vaclav Prospal scored the lone tally of the second period with 2:06 left in the frame.
Prospal, who also had an assist in the game, also has 10 points (five goals, five assists) on the season.
Lecavalier's goal at the 14:29 mark of the third period accounted for the final score.
