(Wednesday, March 8th)
Final Score: Florida 6, Ottawa 2
Sunrise, FL (Sports Network) - Jozef Stumpel and Nathan Horton each scored two goals to lead Florida past the Ottawa Senators, 6-2, at BankAtlantic Center.
Martin Gelinas and Rostislav Olesz also lit the lamp while Roberto Luongo came up with 33 saves in net for the Panthers, who snapped a three-game losing streak.
Luongo made his 19th straight start Wednesday, which broke his own franchise record.
Antoine Vermette and Peter Schaefer had the goals for Ottawa, which entered the game on a five-game winning streak. Ray Emery made 32 saves in defeat.
"It's just one of those games, couldn't do anything right," said Ottawa captain Daniel Alfredsson.
Florida drew first blood with 1:06 remaining in the first period. Jay Bouwmeester took a short pass from Olli Jokinen before racing down the left side and delivering a centering feed, which Stumpel redirected past Emery.
Schaefer netted a one-timer from between the circles 1:52 into the second to tie the contest, but the Panthers struck right back. Just 11 seconds later, Horton corralled Olesz's rebound in the right slot and punched it into the open net to make it 2-1.
Stumpel then scored on a deflection goal with 12:40 to play in the second that gave Florida a three-goal edge.
The Panthers broke the game wide open early in the third. They stretched their lead to 4-1 just 31 seconds into the final stanza, as Gelinas put home a one- timer from the bottom of the left circle. Horton then scored his second of the night and 23rd of the season less than two minutes in to make it a four-goal cushion.
"We know we can play with any team in the league," said Stumpel. "We've proven it before, and when we play hard, we play desperate, we're one of the top clubs, too."
Vermette responded with a wrister from out front only 18 ticks later to cut the Senators' deficit to three, but they were held off the scoreboard the rest of the way.
Olesz added an empty-netter in the final minute to cap the scoring.
The Sens are 18-9-4 as the visiting team this season...The Panthers are 15-8-4 as the host...Ottawa had won the last five contests against Florida...Olesz finished with a pair of assists.
