NHL Game Summary - Chicago at San Jose
(Saturday, October 15th)
Final Score: San Jose 4, Chicago 3
San Jose, CA (Sports Network) - Patrick Marleau scored a pair of power-play goals and added an assist in San Jose's 4-3 victory over the Chicago Blackhawks at HP Pavilion.
Marco Sturm and Jonathan Cheechoo also scored for the Sharks, who have won three in a row.
Matthew Barnaby, Jason Morgan and Matt Ellison had goals for Chicago, which has dropped three of its last four contests.
Evgeni Nabokov stopped 24 shots, including all six he faced in the final period for the Sharks, who won despite going 2-for-11 on the power play.
Craig Anderson made 40 saves for the Blackhawks.
"It's a great way to get in there and get your rhythm," Anderson said. "It's a lot better than seeing 15 or 16 so it makes you really tired, but it keeps you sharp and usually the more shots you see the sharper you are."
Marleau's goal at 7:51 of the second period gave the Sharks a 3-2 lead, as he fired a wrister from above the right circle past Anderson.
Marleau then added his fourth goal of the season less than three minutes later on a shot from below the left circle.
Ellison's first NHL goal made it a 4-3 contest with 1:44 left in the second. His goal from the crease came when Nabokov broke his stick on a Chicago player resulting in a delayed penalty.
Anderson kept Chicago in the game by stopping all 15 shots he faced in the third.
"We had chances and Anderson was spectacular," Sharks head coach Ron Wilson said. "We had a couple of chances to make it 5-2 and we didn't, and they scored. Obviously in the third period, we had some great opportunities and he made some spectacular saves. It was a pretty impressive performance and I tip my hat to him."
Sturm scored at 2:34 of the opening period and nearly eight minutes later Cheechoo netted his second goal of the season.
Morgan scored at 16:55 of the opening period on a 3-on-2 break. The tying goal came from Barnaby, but only after a review after a backhand shot from the crease went into the net. The net was lifted allowing the puck to go through and then a delayed penalty ensued.
The Blackhawks are just 1-4-3-1 in their last nine games in San Jose...Sturm has recorded a point in every Sharks game...The Sharks snapped an 0-for-12 power play drought. They were just 3-for-29 on the season until the power-play tally from Marleau in the second period...Chicago was 0-for-6 with the extra skater.
