NHL Game Summary - Chicago at Columbus
(Tuesday, March 7th)
Final Score: Chicago 3, Columbus 1
Columbus, OH (Sports Network) - Patrick Sharp scored early in the third period to lift the Chicago Blackhawks past the Columbus Blue Jackets, 3-1, at Nationwide Arena.
Radim Vrbata and Matthew Barnaby also tallied for Chicago, which ended a two- game slide. Craig Anderson made 27 saves in the win.
Marc Denis was brilliant in net with 41 saves on 43 shots for the Blue Jackets, who lost for the fifth time in their past six games. Manny Malhotra scored the lone goal for Columbus.
At the 6:01 mark of the final frame and the scored knotted at 1-1, Sharp put the Blackhawks in front with his eighth tally of the year. Kyle Calder chipped the puck out of his own end and Sharp controlled the puck in the neutral zone and was home free on a breakaway. From in tight, he released a snap shot that Denis just missed with his glove and went into the net.
With about 1:30 left to play, Columbus pulled Denis for the extra attacker, but the move backfired as Barnaby netted an empty net goal with 1:18 left.
"We had tons of chances tonight," said Rick Nash of the Blue Jackets. "Goals come in bunches. When you're hot, you're hot, and when you're not, you're not. But I'm not worried at all. We just have to play a full 60 minutes and we have to learn from our mistakes."
After a scoreless opening period, the Blue Jackets opened the scoring midway through the middle session. Malhotra cranked a slap shot from the right point that sailed past a screened Anderson on his glove side.
"He (Malhotra) put the puck on the net and we had traffic in front of the net," said Columbus head coach Gerard Gallant. "It was one of the few times that we had bodies in front of the net tonight. The guys worked hard for it."
With 2:06 remaining in the second stanza, Chicago evened things on Vrbata's ninth goal of the season. From behind the net, Tyler Arnason passed the puck out to Vrbata at the right circle and his slap shot beat Denis on his stick side.
