(Friday, April 2nd)
Final Score: Toronto 2, Buffalo 0
Buffalo, NY (Sports Network) - Ed Belfour made 17 saves for his ninth shutout of the season to help the Toronto Maple Leafs defeat Buffalo, 2-0, at the HSBC Arena.
Chad Kilger scored early in the third period for Toronto, which trails Boston and Ottawa by a single point for the lead in the Northeast Division. The Leafs are in fifth place in the Eastern Conference.
"The team is so confident when he's in the net," said Alexander Mogilny. "When Eddie's on like tonight, it gives us an extra push out there."
Joe Nieuwendyk sealed the win with an empty net goal.
The Sabres were eliminated from playoff contention when the Islanders clinched the final berth in the Eastern Conference with a victory Friday over Carolina.
Mogilny set up the goal by Kilger after 45-plus minutes of scoreless action. Mogilny controlled the puck behind the Sabres' net, skated into the right circle and fed a pass to the slot for Nik Antropov, who fired a shot at Martin Biron. The netminder made the save, but Kilger was alone in front to fire in the rebound.
Biron made 16 saves through the first 40 minutes of play and finished with 27, Belfour turned aside 14 shots for Toronto.
Antropov hit the post early in the third period and Brian Leetch's slap shot was turned away by Biron, as the Leafs stormed out of the gate to begin the third period before Kilger finally beat Biron.
