NHL Game Summary - Carolina at Florida
(Monday, March 29th)
Final Score: Florida 3, Carolina 1
Sunrise, FL (Sports Network) - Roberto Luongo made 28 saves to lead the Florida Panthers over the Carolina Hurricanes, 3-1, in a battle of teams already eliminated from this season's playoffs.
With the win, the Panthers halted their five game overall losing streak (0-4-0-1) and snapped their three-game home slide (0-2-0-1). Kristian Huselius, Matt Cullen and Olli Jokinen scored goals in the win.
Arturs Irbe allowed two goals on 25 shots for the Hurricanes, who had their two-game winning streak snapped. Jaroslav Svoboda tallied the only Carolina goal.
The news wasn't all good for the Panthers, who lost center Stephen Weiss to a broken left leg late in the first period. Florida defenseman Pavel Trnka also left the game with back spasms.
"We've got no luck," Florida coach John Torchetti said about the most recent injuries. "We've got so many broken ankles and toes. It's amazing to me the amount of man-games lost we've had this year."
Florida killed off all six Hurricanes power plays in the game and didn't allow a shot on goal during a Carolina 5-on-3 in the first period.
The Panthers peppered Irbe with 13 shots in the first stanza, and took a 1-0 lead when Huselius scored his 10th on a power play, beating the Carolina netminder glove-side with a wrist shot from the right circle at 12:41.
After a scoreless second period, Cullen made it 2-0 in the third with another Florida power play goal from the right circle. His sixth of the season also beat Irbe glove-side just 2:13 into the stanza.
"The second goal was big by Cullen, really big," Torchetti said.
Svoboda took advantage of a Luongo mistake at the other end just 1:01 later to get the Hurricanes within a goal. Luongo came out to play the puck behind the Florida net, but his clearing pass was intercepted below the left circle by Svoboda, who rifled a tough-angle shot past the scrambling netminder.
But the Panthers were able to hold on, and Jokinen iced it with an empty-net goal at 19:16 of the third. He also tallied an assist in the game on Huselius' goal.
The Hurricanes have lost five straight at the Office Depot Center...Carolina had been undefeated in regulation over its previous 12 road games (8-0-1-3)...Florida went 2-for-5 on the power play...Lyle Odelein and Branislav Mezei had assists for the Panthers.
