NHL Game Summary - Dallas at Vancouver

(Saturday, March 27th)

Final Score: Vancouver 3, Dallas 2 (OT)

Vancouver, BC (Sports Network) - Brendan Morrison scored in overtime to give the Vancouver Canucks a 3-2 victory over the Dallas Stars. Daniel Sedin and Geoff Sanderson also scored for the Canucks, who moved into a tie with Dallas for fourth place in the Western Conference.

"We're all just trying to build our confidence heading into the first playoff game," said Morrison. "A goal like this in a game like this will definitely build our confidence."

Dan Cloutier made 22 saves for Vancouver, which moved to within one point of first-place Colorado in the Northwest Division.

Brenden Morrow and Pierre Turgeon scored for the Stars. Ron Tugnutt made 27 saves in defeat.

The Stars controlled the play in the Vancouver zone early in the extra session, but Morrison jumped on a loose puck near the blue line and raced up ice on the right wing. The shot from the dot deflected off the stick of Stars defenseman Lubomir Sekeras and fooled Tugnutt, beating the netminder to the far side 40 seconds into overtime.

Dallas took the lead early in the first period. Rob DiMaio collected a rebound at the side of the Canucks' net and slid the puck to Morrow in the slot. With Cloutier sprawled and out of position, Morrow shot into an open net to give Dallas a 1-0 lead.

Sedin, stationed at the left side of the net, redirected Marek Malik's shot from the point past Tugnutt at 18:30 of the opening period to tie the score.

Turgeon gave the Stars a 2-1 lead just 1:25 into the second period, and they took a one-goal advantage into the final period. Dallas had been undefeated in their previous 69 games (61-0-8) dating back to last season, when leading after 40 minutes, but that streak came to an end.

Brent Sopel, from deep in his own zone, put the puck right on the stick of a streaking Sanderson behind the Stars' defense. Sanderson moved in on Tugnutt and beat the netminder with a high wrist shot to the stick side at 9:38 of the third period to tie the contest at 2-2.

The Canucks went on the power play with under nine minutes left in the third period when Dallas' Don Sweeney was whistled off for slashing. Henrik Sedin collected his own rebound at the side of the net, but Cloutier made a great stick save to keep the game tied.

Vancouver had another man advantage with under five minutes to go in the third, but the Stars did not allow a shot on Tugnutt. Just after the penalty ended Markus Naslund had a golden opportunity, but lost control of the puck after beating Tugnutt with a nice move. The puck rolled across the crease behind the netminder and was cleared away.
