Dallas, TX (Sports Network) - Mike Modano tallied a goal and an assist and Marty Turco stopped just 18 shots, leading the Dallas Stars over the St. Louis Blues, 3-1, at American Airlines Center.
Stu Barnes and Jere Lehtinen each lit the lamp for the Stars, who are undefeated in their last 17 home games (13-0-4). Dallas has won two straight overall and moved past Vancouver and into fourth place in the Western Conference standings. Both teams have 89 points, but the Starts have 38 wins, one more than the Canucks.
Chris Osgood stopped 26 shots for St. Louis, which is winless in its last four games at Dallas (0-3-1). Ryan Johnson scored the lone goal for the Blues in the setback.
The Stars played the contest without defenseman Teppo Numminen, who was diagnosed with a heart ailment that will sideline him indefinitely. The veteran, who has played in 59 games this season for the Stars, is suffering from a dilated aorta, one of the largest arteries leaving the heart.
Barnes snapped a 1-1 contest as Dallas put the game away with two goals in the span of 27 seconds in the third period.
Barnes tally came at 7:56 of final period on a nice feed from Pierre Turgeon. Turgeon grabbed a loose puck from behind the net, skated back and forth until he finally found Barnes on the door step. The center then fired home the puck for a 2-1 edge.
"He is so good back there," Barnes said of Turgeon. "He made a great play to find me in the slot. It wasn't a tough one for me at all. All I had to do was shoot it."
Lehtinen would add an insurance goal 27 seconds later. Leighton finished off a nice feed from Modano, beating Osgood glove side for his 12th of the season and a 3-1 lead with 11:37 remaining.
Dallas struck first in the second period on a power-play tally by Modano, his 14th of the season. Scott Mellanby was called off for holding and the Stars cashed in for the early lead.
Jason Arnott skated through the Blues defense and passed the puck to Modano just before the left face-off circle. Modano, uncontested on the play, skated forward and ripped a blast from the left circle, beating Osgood stick side 5:23 into the stanza.
"The home ice has been very good to us," Modano said. "We have to find a way to carry it over and get that same killer instinct on the road."
St. Louis would get the equalizer just 50 seconds later. Pavol Demitra slipped a pass to Keith Tkachuk, who fired a high shot from the slot on net. Turco was unable to make a clean save and Johnson followed up the play by stuffing home the disc at 6:13.
