NHL Game Summary - Vancouver at Dallas

(Thursday, March 18th)

Final Score: Dallas 3, Vancouver 0

Dallas, TX (Sports Network) - Marty Turco stopped all 20 shots he faced to earn his eighth shutout of the season, lifting the Dallas Stars to a 3-0 victory over Vancouver at American Airlines Center.

Jason Arnott and Bill Guerin each scored a goal and assisted on two others for the Stars, who ran their home unbeaten streak to 16 games (12-0-4). In the process, Dallas moved within a point of Vancouver for the fourth spot in the Western Conference playoff race with 87 points. Both teams have eight games remaining.

"Our focus first and foremost is how we play," Stars head coach Dave Tippett said. "If we play like we're capable of playing, the numbers will take care of themselves."

Philippe Boucher tallied the Stars' other goal to give him a career-high eight this season.

Dan Cloutier started in net for the Canucks, but was chased following the second period after allowing all three goals on 17 shots. Johan Hedberg stopped all four shots he faced in the final 20 minutes, as Vancouver fell to 2-4-3 in its last nine games.

The win also marked Dallas' fourth straight over the Canucks dating back to last season.

"It's still a little early yet, but there's a strong possibility we'll be playing each other again in the playoffs," Cloutier said. "We wanted to come in here, get a win and pick up two points, but we didn't play well enough to do that."

Boucher scored the game's first goal at the 12:23 mark of the first period on a one-timer. Arnott collected a loose puck in the far right corner and fed Boucher, who was charging toward the net. Boucher skated into the slot and one-timed a slapper that beat Cloutier stick-side.

Turco had his busiest period in the first 20 minutes as he turned aside eight shots.

Arnott's 20th of the season made it 2-0 just 2:43 into the second period. Arnott picked up a loose puck at center ice and skated in all alone. The Stars forward moved to the doorstep, where he beat Cloutier with a wrist shot that went low on the stick side.

The tally ensured Arnott of his sixth straight season with at least 20 goals.

"I've been pretty fortunate," Arnott said. "The net's been finding me a little bit."

Guerin notched the contest's final goal with 7:11 remaining in the frame. Arnott fired a wrister on net and Cloutier made the initial save with his right leg pad. The puck bounced out and Guerin was there to poke it through the goaltender's pads.

Turco stopped seven shots in the final period to give him 20 shutouts for his career.
