NHL Game Summary - Buffalo at Boston
(Saturday, March 13th)
Final Score: Boston 3, Buffalo 2 (OT)
Boston, MA (Sports Network) - Mike Knuble's second straight overtime goal lifted the Boston Bruins past the Buffalo Sabres, 3-2, at the FleetCenter.
Knuble scored the game-winner Saturday with only four seconds left in the extra session. He notched the winning goal on Thursday versus Buffalo just 1:15 into overtime.
Glen Murray and Nick Boynton also scored for the Bruins, who rallied from a two-goal deficit. Andrew Raycroft stopped 23 shots for Boston, which extended its unbeaten streak to five games (4-0-1).
"We were very lucky to come back from 2-0 down and get what we got today," said Knuble. "After we got three-quarters of the way through the first period, we were very good. You could just look at the shot clock and see that. We took some penalties early and that set us back on our heels."
Daniel Briere and Jay McKee tallied goals for the Sabres, who earned at least a point for the fifth time in their last six contests (3-1-0-2). Martin Biron made 36 saves for Buffalo.
On the winning goal, Michael Nylander and Knuble broke into the Buffalo zone 2-on-1. Nylander held the puck until the defenseman committed and then backhanded a pass across the crease to Knuble, who fired the puck over Biron for his 21st goal of the year.
Murray scored with 11:25 remaining in the third period to tie the contest at 2-2. Joe Thornton controlled the puck at the side of the net and fed a perfect pass to Murray in the left circle. Murray then one-timed a shot past Biron for his 29th tally of the year.
Briere gave Buffalo a 1-0 lead at 5:57 of the first period when he beat Raycroft with a high wrist shot. McKee increased the advantage to two goals with 8:27 remaining in the first, firing a shot from between the circles past the Bruins' goaltender.
Boynton got Boston on the board with a fluke goal at 4:51 of the second period. Boynton had the puck deep in his own zone while the Bruins were shorthanded. He then fired it down the ice, but the puck took a crazy bounce off the boards at center ice and went directly into the net, which was vacated when Biron, thinking the puck would end up at the side of the cage, went out to play it.
"It was a hard fought game. We controlled the game in the first. They came out storming in the second. A bizarre goal gave them life," said Buffalo head coach Lindy Ruff. "That's youth. Marty (Biron) left the net way, way too soon but still he played a great game. We played an elite team in the East very well."
