(Monday, March 1st)
Final Score: Tampa Bay 3, Colorado 0
Denver, CO (Sports Network) - Nikolai Khabibulin stopped 16 shots for his third shutout of the season and Vincent Lecavalier tallied a goal and an assist, as the Tampa Bay Lightning blanked the Colorado Avalanche, 3-0, at the Pepsi Center.
Khabibulin made five saves in the first period, seven in the second and four more in the third as he recorded his 35th career shutout.
"I think we were able to shut them down. They (Colorado) just didn't have their best game tonight," said Khabibulin.
Brad Richards and Martin St. Louis also scored goals for the Lightning, who have won five in a row and improved to 15-1-1-2 in their last 19 contests.
David Aebischer turned aside 26 shots for Colorado, which fell to 1-5-1-1 in its last eight games. Milan Hejduk had the best opportunity to score for the Avalanche, but his shot late in the first period hit the post.
"They (Tampa Bay) played very well. We just didn't get any chances," said Aebischer. "Everybody here is surprised. There is just no miracles here."
Richards gave the Lightning a 1-0 lead at 5:21 of the first period. Fredrik Modin picked up the puck in the corner, skated to the bottom of the right circle and fired a shot that caromed off the crossbar and behind Aebischer. Richards was then able to beat the goaltender to the puck and stuffed it into the net for his 21st goal of the season.
Aebischer kept it a one-goal game when he robbed Lecavalier with just over two minutes left in the opening stanza. Lecavalier appeared to have an open net to shoot at from the right side, but Aebischer slid across to make the save.
The Avalanche netminder again came up big five minutes into the third period when he stuck out the pad to stone Dan Boyle, who was alone at the side of the net.
Lecavalier then made it 2-0 with 5:40 left in the third, as he skated in alone after taking a pass from Ruslan Fedotenko and beat Aebischer with a nice move to the backhand for his 25th tally of the campaign.
St. Louis sealed the contest when he scored into an empty net with 1:05 remaining. It was his 32nd goal of the year.
