NHL Game Summary - Columbus at Anaheim
(Wednesday, February 18th)
Final Score: Anaheim 3, Columbus 1
Anaheim, CA (Sports Network) - Vaclav Prospal scored the game-winner with 1:49 remaining in the third period, lifting the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim to a 3-1 victory over Columbus at the Pond.
Cam Severson also scored for Anaheim and Sergei Fedorov added an empty-netter, as the Ducks won their third straight contest and for the fifth time in six games (5-1). Jean-Sebastien Giguere made 19 saves in the win.
The Blue Jackets got a goal from Geoff Sanderson and 31 stops in net from Marc Denis, but lost for the fourth time in six games (2-3-0-1). They are now winless in their last five trips to Anaheim (0-4-1).
The teams were scoreless for more than two periods after Severson tied the game at 1-1 midway through the first period.
But Prospal changed all that when he found a loose puck after a faceoff in the Columbus zone and wristed a soft shot over Denis' glove for his 17th of the season.
Columbus forward Rick Nash, tied for the NHL lead with 31 goals, had a pair of sparkling chances to tie it before all was said and done, but Giguere stoned him on two point-blank shots.
"There are no excuses," Nash said. "He just made a couple of great saves."
Nash was all alone in front on the first opportunity, but jammed a backhand into the pads of Giguere. Then, as the final seconds ticked away, he stumbled upon a loose puck in front after an awkward carom off the end boards, but was unable to convert.
Fedorov snatched the rebound off that one and fired it the length of the ice for an empty-netter to seal it.
The Blue Jackets tested Giguere with just four shots in the opening period, but jumped on the board first when Sanderson scored his 11th at 5:55, snatching a turnover in the slot and beating the Anaheim netminder glove-side with a wrister.
The Ducks peppered Denis with 18 shots in the first and evened the score at 11:49 on Severson's first career NHL goal. Jason Krog nearly scored with a tight-angle shot from the right circle, and Severson jumped on the loose puck behind Denis for the tap-in.
Anaheim has won five straight on its home ice and is 6-0-1-1 in its last eight at the Pond...Both teams were scoreless on five power play opportunities...Giguere picked up his second assist of the season on Fedorov's empty-net goal.
