NHL Game Summary - Colorado at Anaheim
(Friday, January 30th)
Final Score: Anaheim 4, Colorado 3 (OT)
Anaheim, CA (Sports Network) - Sergei Fedorov tallied the tying-goal with just 46 seconds left in regulation and Niclas Havelid posted the game-winner 3:39 into overtime to lift Anaheim over Colorado, 4-3, and spoil Paul Kariya's return at the Pond.
"We started the game with a lot of confidence," Fedorov said. "We were skating well as a group and going pretty hard. We matched up well against their top lines and when we had chances against them, we scored. We're excited about this win and we should build on it."
Kariya, who recorded two assists in the loss, signed with Colorado as a free agent in the offseason after spending the first nine years of his career with the Ducks. He holds franchise records in nearly all offensive categories for Anaheim.
Vaclav Prospal scored a goal and added two helpers for the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim, who snapped a two-game slide.
Joe Sakic registered a goal and an assist for the Avalanche, who fell for the first time in seven games (4-0-2-1). Colorado has still earned a point in the last 13 road games (7-0-4-2).
Havelid's game-winner came on the power play on a one-timer from behind the circles that found its way to the back of the net up high for his third of the season.
Fedorov tied the contest at 3-3 with a backhander from the slot as he tallied his 17th of the year with the goaltender out of the net for the extra attacker.
Peter Forsberg opened the scoring for Colorado 11:16 into the second period while on the power play.
But at 13:59, Prospal tied the game at 1-1 for the Ducks with a shot from close range after receiving a pass from behind the net.
Steve Rucchin closed out the second-stanza scoring at 18:31 and the Ducks took a 2-1 lead into the third period.
Steve Konowalchuk lit the lamp just 47 seconds into the third for Colorado and then Sakic scored at 15:10 to give the Avs a 3-2 edge.
David Aebischer stopped 20 shots for Colorado, while his counterpart, Martin Gerber made 29 saves for Anaheim.
The Mighty Ducks, 10-7-6-3 at home this season, ended a brief two-game stand...Gerber is 8-1-3 in his last 12 decisions at the Pond.
