Final Score: NY Islanders 3, Atlanta 0
Atlanta, GA (Sports Network) - Oleg Kvasha scored a goal and assisted on another, as the New York Islanders pulled out a 3-0 road win over Atlanta at Philips Arena.
Rick DiPietro earned his second career shutout by stopping all 25 shots he faced, as the Islanders won for the fourth time in their last five games. DiPietro also got credit for an assist on Kvasha's tally.
"I'm glad that I'm getting to play on a more consistent basis," DiPietro said. "I'm getting a lot more confidence and the team has been playing great in front of me the last few games."
Mattias Weinhandl and Arron Asham tallied the other two goals for the Isles, who won for just the second time in their last seven road games (2-3-2). Janne Niinimaa tallied two helpers in the win. All three of New York's goals came on the power play.
Pasi Nurminen stopped 23 of the 26 shots he faced, including a penalty shot for the Thrashers, as Atlanta had its three-game unbeaten streak snapped.
Asham backhanded in a goal with less than one second remaining in the game to close out the scoring.
Kvasha notched his 10th goal of the season early in the third period to make it 2-0 Isles. The New York forward took a pass from Niinimaa at the Atlanta blue line and skated down the right boards into the slot, where he wristed it over Nurminen's shoulder.
Blake had a chance to extend New York's lead on a penalty shot opportunity early in the second period. Blake, who was slashed by Shawn McEachern on a breakaway, tried to lift a wrister over Nurminen but failed to get the puck airborne as Atlanta's netminder brushed the shot away with his right leg pad.
Nurminen faced 11 shots in the period and held up strong by denying all of them.
Weinhandl's tally at the 9:32 mark of the first period put Islanders on top, 1-0. Weinhandl skated into the crease and redirected Kvasha's pass over Nurminen's shoulder for the goal.
