NHL Game Summary - Buffalo at Boston
(Thursday, January 22nd)
Final Score: Buffalo 3, Boston 2
Boston, MA (Sports Network) - Miroslav Satan scored two third-period goals to lift the Buffalo Sabres past the Boston Bruins, 3-2, at the FleetCenter.
Martin Biron stopped 23 shots for the Sabres, who snapped a three-game losing streak. Rory Fitzpatrick added the other goal for Buffalo, which is just 3-5-2 in its last 10 games overall.
"When it was 1-0 we really should have been up 4 or 5 nothing. They (Boston) hung in there and then it seemed like they got their big break, but Satan's goal was huge." Sabres head coach Lindy Ruff said.
Andrew Raycroft made 26 saves for Boston, which had its two-game winning streak snapped and lost for only the second time in its last 11 overall (8-2-1). The setback also marked the first loss for the Bruins at home in their last seven contests (5-1-1).
Glen Murray and Mike Knuble scored for Boston, which played its second straight contest without captain Joe Thornton.
Thornton sustained a facial laceration and a small fracture to his cheekbone during a fight with New York Rangers center Eric Lindros on Monday, and underwent successful surgery Thursday to stabilize his right cheekbone. According to doctors Thornton is expected to miss Saturday night's home game against Florida.
The first goal of the night for Satan came with 6:20 left and snapped a 1-1 tie. Dmitri Kalinin pressured the Bruins from behind their own net and finally took control of the puck waiting patiently to find an open teammate.
Satan nonchalantly slipped by the Bruins defense and found himself all alone in the slot, where Kalinin slipped a pass to the winger. Satan settled the puck with his skate, then moved it over to his stick and ripped a shot that beat Raycroft glove-side.
The Sabres sealed it with just under two minutes left when Satan scored into an empty net.
"Our line really clicked tonight. There was a lot of good movement out there and it paid off." Satan said.
Knuble then scored his 14th of the season with six seconds remaining to account for the final margin.
Fitzpatrick gave the Sabres an early 1-0 advantage at the 11:35 mark of the first period, ripping a low shot just inside the point that beat Raycroft stick-side.
Biron made the goal stand up through two periods, stopping all 12 shots he faced.
The Bruins finally scored the equalizer at 8:11 of the third. P.J. Axelsson grabbed a loose puck at the point and slipped a pass to a trailing Murray, who was just in front of the right circle and snapped a low shot that beat Biron five-hole.
It was announced prior to the game that Boston defenseman Nick Boynton had been named to the Eastern Conference All-Star team.
