NHL Game Summary - St. Louis at Columbus
(Wednesday, January 21st)
Final Score: Columbus 3, St. Louis 1
Columbus, OH (Sports Network) - Manny Malhotra scored two third period goals to lift the Columbus Blue Jackets to a 3-1 win over St. Louis at Nationwide Arena.
Todd Marchant scored the Blue Jackets' other goal, as Columbus ran its unbeaten streak to three games (2-0-1). The Blue Jackets also snapped a six- game losing streak to the Blues.
Blue Jacket goaltender Marc Denis stopped 27 of the 28 shots he faced, including 22 in the final two periods. Columbus won at home for just the second time in its last 11 tries (2-6-2-1).
"Our effort and enthusiasm paid off out there," Malhotra said. "That was one of the big things Turk (interim coach Gerard Gallant) addressed before the game. We want to come out with energy and set the tempo of the game rather than sit back and allow them to get chances."
Chris Pronger scored the Blues' lone goal, as St. Louis had its three-game unbeaten streak halted. Chris Osgood faced 30 shots, turning aside 27 of them.
Pronger's goal was assisted by both Pavol Demitra and Keith Tkachuk, as each extended their points streaks in defeat. Demitra extended his to six games (4g, 4a), while Tkachuk pushed his to five (8a).
Malhotra put the game away with his second goal of the final period at the 15:05 mark. Jeremy Reich, playing in his first career NHL game, dug the puck out of the corner and passed it out to a waiting Malhotra between the circles. Malhotra gathered the pass and wristed it past Osgood stickside for the two- goal advantage.
Malhotra's first goal of the third, the eventual game-winner, was a tougher one to notch, as the Blue Jackets grabbed a 2-1 lead at the 5:09 mark.
The forward was able to gather a loose puck in the neutral zone and race into the St. Louis end. Malhotra wristed a shot from the top of the right circle, but the puck deflected off Osgood's pads and back to him. A Blues' defender tripped up Malhotra, who slapped the puck past Osgood while sliding on his stomach into the boards.
Pronger tied the game 90 seconds into the second period. It was Pronger's 11th of the season, as Demitra and Tkachuk earned their 25th and 27th helpers of the season, respectively.
Marchant put Columbus on the board first with a power-play goal with a little under seven minutes gone by in the game. Marchant skated into the crease and backhanded a rebound attempt past Osgood off a Darryl Sydor slap shot.
