NHL Game Summary - NY Islanders at Toronto
(Tuesday, January 20th)
Final Score: Toronto 2, NY Islanders 0
Toronto, ON (Sports Network) - Gary Roberts and Mikael Renberg each collected a goal and an assist, and Ed Belfour recorded his 70th career shutout, as the Toronto Maple Leafs shut out the New York Islanders, 2-0, at Air Canada Centre.
Belfour made 25 saves for his 20th win of the year and his fifth shutout. It marked the first time in his storied career that he blanked the Islanders.
Mats Sundin had one assist and Tomas Kaberle, who missed his previous five games with a shoulder injury and an illness, also chipped in with a helper. Toronto won for just the second time in six games (2-4-0).
Garth Snow stopped 19-of-21 shots for New York, which lost for the first time in four contests (2-1-1).
Renberg scored nine minutes into the game to put the Maple Leafs up 1-0. It was the first goal in 14 games for Renberg, who one-timed a pass from Kaberle at the right circle for the tally. Prior to the goal, Roman Hamrlik was called for a delayed penalty, and the Leafs capitalized with the extra skater before the infraction was actually enforced.
Late in the second period, Jason Blake caught Darcy Tucker underneath the left eye with a high stick in the Toronto offensive zone, but the referees missed the infraction, which bloodied Tucker's cheek. The Isles quickly got two good scoring chances, but Belfour stopped both.
"There's reason to believe there's a problem," Toronto head coach Pat Quinn said of Tucker, who will only join the team flight to Washington if tests find no further damage to the eye. "The referees are catching some, but they're not catching enough. These players have their sticks up there."
Belfour came up huge in the third period, particularly when Alexei Ponikarovsky was sent off with seven minutes remaining for a high-stick. The netminder made several key saves during the ensuing power play, none bigger than when he stopped Blake at point-blank range, stacking the pads against the right post.
Toronto got an insurance goal from Roberts with 2:39 to play, his 17th on the season. Renberg and Sundin played keep-away with the Isles defense in the left corner, and Sundin emerged with the puck. He skated parallel to the goal line, hitting Roberts just outside the crease in front with a backhand pass. Roberts beat a helpless Snow with a one-timer.
Toronto winger Tom Fitzgerald took a slapshot off the inside of his skate late in the contest, and hobbled off...Belfour has 421 career wins, two behind Tony Esposito for fourth on the NHL's all-time win list...Roberts had only two assists in his previous seven games...Tucker was sent to the hospital for evaluation...The Maple Leafs are 7-3-1 in their last 11 at home...New York is 0-3-2 in its last five away from home...New York is just 1-5-1 in its last seven trips to Toronto.
