NHL Game Summary - Colorado at Tampa Bay
(Monday, January 19th)
Final Score: Colorado 5, Tampa Bay 4 (OT)
Tampa, FL (Sports Network) - Milan Hejduk scored on a penalty shot 59 seconds into overtime to lift Colorado over Tampa Bay, 5-4, at St. Pete Times Forum.
"It was an interesting finish," Hejduk said. "Not many times you'll see a penalty shot in overtime."
Hejduk tied the game in the third and finished with two goals and two assists for the Avalanche, who have won five of their last six games.
Fredrik Modin, Dmitry Afanasenkov, Tim Taylor and Ruslan Fedotenko each lit the lamp for the Lightning, who dropped their second straight on the heels of a five-game win streak.
"I think we need a save," Lightning coach John Tortorella said. "I have some negative thoughts about a couple things and guys, but I don't have a negative feeling about our hockey club."
Hejduk's 23rd of the season came after he skated down on the penalty and, with a wrister, beat Nikolai Khabibulin high to the glove side for the victory.
Khabibulin, who finished with 19 saves, was outplayed by Colorado's David Aebischer, who stopped 31 shots.
Just 4:57 into the game, Modin opened the scoring with his 13th of the season on a wrist shot from the left circle for Tampa Bay.
Colorado, though, posted the next two goals to take a 2-1 edge into the second period. Joe Sakic's 19th of the season came at 10:21 while shorthanded to tie the contest at 1-1 for the Avalanche.
Then, 2:50 later, Martin Skoula gave Colorado the one-goal lead with a slap shot from the blue line.
The Lightning knotted the game at 2-2 when Afanasenkov got to a loose puck and blasted it in from the bottom of the left circle 4:16 into the second.
At 9:04 of the second, Alex Tanguay gave Colorado a 3-2 lead with a wrist shot from the right circle.
But before the frame ended, Taylor and Fedotenko each found the back of the net as Tampa Bay took a 4-3 lead into the third.
Hejduk's 22nd of the season on a pass from Steve Konowalchuk tied the game at 4-4 at 13:41 of the third.
