NHL Game Summary - Edmonton at Nashville
(Saturday, January 17th)
Final Score: Nashville 2, Edmonton 1
Nashville, TN (Sports Network) - Tomas Vokoun made 21 saves and Scott Walker provided the offense with a goal and an assist in Nashville's 2-1 victory over Edmonton.
The Predators improved to 4-0-2 in their last six games and beat Edmonton at home for the first time in seven meetings (1-5-1).
Ryan Smyth scored and Tommy Salo made 29 saves for the Oilers, who lost for just the second time in five games (3-2).
Salo made 14 saves during a scoreless opening period, but Walker beat the Edmonton netminder midway through the middle stanza with a wrist shot to give the Predators a 1-0 edge.
"Tommy Salo was unreal," said Oilers head coach Craig MacTavish. "There is no way it should have been 0-0 after the first period."
Greg Johnson gave the Predators a 2-0 lead with a short-handed goal at 8:28 of the third period. The goal was setup by Walker and Mark Eaton.
The Predators had a goal reversed just 2:50 later after officials looked at video replay and ruled Walker kicked the puck into the net on a power play.
Smyth spoiled Vokoun's shutout bid with just nine seconds remaining in the third period, but it was too little, too late for Edmonton.
The Predators are unbeaten in their last nine (7-0-2) games at home...The Oilers have lost four of their last five on the road...Each team failed in five opportunities on the power play...Edmonton defenseman Cory Cross suffered a broken nose in the first period and did not return...Nashville defenseman Kimmo Timonen missed his first game of the season with an ankle injury...Jamie Allison notched his first assist for Nashville.
