NHL Game Summary - Vancouver at San Jose

(Thursday, January 15th)

Final Score: San Jose 3, Vancouver 1

San Jose, CA (Sports Network) - Alyn McCauley posted a goal and an assist and Evgeni Nabokov made 34 saves, as the San Jose Sharks downed the Vancouver Canucks, 3-1, at the Shark Tank.

Alexander Korolyuk and Jonathan Cheechoo also scored for San Jose, which has won four of its last six games. The Sharks have earned a point in 11 of their last 13 contests overall (9-2-1-1).

Markus Naslund tallied the only goal for the Canucks, who saw their four-game unbeaten streak halted (3-1-1). Dan Cloutier allowed three goals on 30 shots in the loss.

Two goals in a 59-second span midway through the opening period gave the Sharks a two-goal edge.

"We had some passion and a lot of jump and speed in the first period," said San Jose coach Ron Wilson.

Korolyuk started the scoring when he took the puck down the left-wing side, skated behind the net and put home a wraparound attempt at the right post for a 1-0 Sharks lead at 11:46.

Just under a minute later, Cheechoo's 13th goal of the season pushed the San Jose lead to two.

"We weren't nearly strong enough at the start," stated Vancouver coach Marc Crawford. "That ended up being the difference."

Although the Canucks controlled play in the middle stanza, they could not find the back of the net.

Early in the middle frame, Henrik Sedin was all alone at the left post and made repeated attempts to put it past Nabokov, but the San Jose goaltender was able to stack the pads and keep the puck in front of him.

Later in the period, Canucks' blueliner Mattias Ohlund hit the crossbar when he was all alone in the slot.

On a Vancouver power play, Todd Bertuzzi took his usual post at the goal mouth and accepted a feed, but could not put the puck home from in close. Despite 16 shots on goal, Vancouver could not solve Nabokov and the Sharks held a two- goal lead after 40 minutes of play.

In the final period, Cloutier made a very costly mistake that led to the third San Jose goal at 3:24. When he tried to race out toward the blue line for a loose puck, he whiffed on the clearing attempt.

The Sharks eventually took control and a rebound by McCauley found the back of the net before Cloutier was able to fully get back in position.

Just 19 seconds later, Naslund scored to bring the Canucks within 3-1. Jason King took a shot from the left circle and the save was made, but Naslund was in position in front to put home the rebound.

Nabokov, though, continued his stellar play and the Sharks cruised to victory.
