NHL Game Summary - Montreal at Atlanta

(Wednesday, January 14th)

Final Score: Montreal 2, Atlanta 1

Atlanta, GA (Sports Network) - Mike Ribeiro scored a goal for the third straight game and added an assist, as the Montreal Canadiens won their third in a row with a 2-1 triumph over the slumping Atlanta Thrashers at Philips Arena.

Pierre Dagenais also scored for the Canadiens, while Jose Theodore stopped 36 shots, and Montreal has just one loss in its last nine games (7-1-1).

Randy Robitaille scored the lone goal for the Thrashers, who haven't won in eight contests (0-6-1-1). Byron Dafoe took the loss despite stopping 29 of the 31 shots he faced.

Atlanta got more bad news when Marc Savard left the game in the second period with a Grade 1-2 MCL sprain of the right knee. His status for future games is unknown. The injury occurred in the second period, when he collided knee-to- knee with Michael Komisarek.

Less than a minute after Atlanta tied the game at one apiece, Ribeiro came charging down the left side with the puck, but was pulled down by Ivan Majesky as he approached the net. However, the loose puck skipped up into the air bounced off of Majesky's shoulder, and past Dafoe for the eventual game- winner.

The Canadiens had Dafoe scrambling in the waning seconds of the first period, but the game remained scoreless after one.

But Montreal would break through in the second period, as Ribeiro took a pass in the right offensive corner from Richard Zednik at the right boards, and started to move toward the net. He spotted Dagenais all alone in the high slot and Dagenais one-timed a perfect pass from Ribeiro past a helpless Dafoe.

Robitaille tied things up for Atlanta 8:36 into the final stanza. Garnet Exelby ripped a shot from the top of the left faceoff circle, which Robitaille deflected past Theodore to the glove side.
