Washington, DC (Sports Network) - Olaf Kolzig made 26 saves to record his first shutout of the season, leading the Washington Capitals to a 1-0 win over the Edmonton Oilers at the MCI Center.
Robert Lang scored the game's only goal, allowing the Capitals to win their second straight game for just the second time this season. Washington's two- game win streak comes on the heels of a seven-game skid that saw them allow a total of 27 goals while posting an 0-6-1 mark. The Capitals yielded three or more goals in six of those seven contests.
Tommy Salo denied 21-of-22 shots he faced in the losing effort. Nonetheless, the Oilers ended their six-game road trip with a more than respectable 3-2-0-1 mark.
Lang found the back of the net for his 22nd goal of the season with just 20 seconds remaining in opening stanza. He positioned himself between the circles and took a pass from the along the boards from Jeff Halpern. Lang's shot beat Salo five-hole to account for what would be the only tally of the contest.
Jaromir Jagr also picked up an assist on the goal to end a streak of five consecutive games without a point.
The Capitals and Kolzig killed off six power plays in the game, including three in the middle period. Edmonton came up empty with two full minutes of a two-man advantage in the third.
Kolzig was called upon to deny 10 shots in the first period, nine in the second and seven more in the final stanza to record his 32nd career shutout.
Game Notes
The Caps have won five straight at home over the Oilers. Edmonton's last win in the nation's capital came back on January 26, 1997...This was also the first shutout by Washington this season...Edmonton has been blanked five times this season...Salo fell to 4-2-1-1 in his last eight starts in net.
