NHL Game Summary - Detroit at Boston
(Saturday, January 10th)
Final Score: Boston 2, Detroit 1 (OT)
Boston, MA (Sports Network) - Joe Thornton scored with 2:30 remaining in overtime, lifting the Boston Bruins to a 2-1 win over the Detroit Red Wings at the FleetCenter.
Martin Lapointe posted the other goal for the Bruins, who have won three straight and improved to 4-0-1 in their last five games. Andrew Raycroft made 27 saves for the win.
"I thought our team played real well," said Bruins head coach Mike Sullivan. "Our players did everything we asked them to tonight."
Kirk Maltby scored the lone goal for Detroit, which suffered its second straight loss to Boston. The Bruins also beat the Red Wings, 3-0, on Wednesday. Detroit dropped its second straight game after a four-game win streak. Curtis Joseph turned aside 33 shots in defeat.
With the score knotted at one midway through overtime, Thornton netted the game-winning goal with 2:30 left. Joseph was pulled to his left and Thornton took a pass in the slot from Dan McGillis. Thornton fired the puck into the open net for just his ninth goal of the season.
"He just saw me," said Thornton about the pass from McGillis. "And he made a great play to get it back to me. The defensemen both made good plays to allow us to score."
Thornton, who was selected as a starter for the Eastern Conference all-star team earlier this week, scored for only the second time in his last 13 games. He did, however, record a tally in both of the wins over Detroit and now has a point in five straight games.
Maltby gave the Red Wings a 1-0 lead eight minutes into the game with his seventh goal of the season. Ray Whitney shoveled a Steve Yzerman feed on net and Maltby was in front to whack the rebound past Raycroft.
After a scoreless second period, Boston tied the game 4:46 into the third when Lapointe cashed in a power play for his eighth goal. Lapointe made a heads-up play when he stuffed a rebound past Joseph.
The Bruins threatened to take the lead, but Brian Rolston's snap shot from the goal mouth was gloved down by Joseph with three minutes left in the extra period.
Thornton then beat the goaltender with 2:30 remaining in OT to end the contest.
