Washington, DC (Sports Network) - Jaromir Jagr posted a goal and two assists to lead the Washington Capitals over Southeast Division rival Carolina, 4-1, at the MCI Center.
Alexander Semin and Robert Lang each had a goal and an assist, and Bates Battaglia added a goal for the Capitals, who snapped a seven-game winless streak (0-6-1) and won for the first time in their last five contests at home (1-3-1). Olaf Kolzig made 29 saves.
Jeff O'Neill lit the lamp for Carolina in the first period, but the Caps scored four unanswered goals for the win. Kevin Weekes turned aside just 12 of the 16 shots he faced for the Hurricanes, who were seeking a season-best third straight win. They are now 2-4-0 in their last six overall.
Semin gave the Capitals a 2-1 lead with a power-play goal in the second period. Lang's wrister from the slot was turned aside by Weekes, but Semin was in perfect position for the rebound, which he back-handed past Weekes with 3:07 remaining in the period.
Lang and Battaglia then scored 34 seconds apart early in the third period to give the Caps a comfortable lead.
Lang tallied a power play goal, his 21st of the season, on a wrister from the left circle at 2:15 of the third. He now has an NHL-leading 49 points.
Battaglia's third of the season created the final margin.
Carolina grabbed an early 1-0 lead on O'Neill's power play goal at 5:53 of the first period. Eric Staal set up the goal with a pass from the end line into the slot, where O'Neill scored with a knuckling wrister over Kolzig's right shoulder.
But Jagr evened the game with his 14th of the season just 46 seconds into the second period, scoring on a rebound in front of the Carolina goal.
