NHL Game Summary - Minnesota at Colorado

(Sunday, January 4th)

Final Score: Colorado 3, Minnesota 1

Denver, CO (Sports Network) - Milan Hejduk scored his second game-winning goal in two nights and the Colorado Avalanche won their third straight game, a 3-1 triumph over the Minnesota Wild at the Pepsi Center.

Teemu Selanne and Peter Forsberg also tallied for the Avalanche, who improved to 4-1-2 in their last seven overall. Philippe Sauve stopped 25 shots for the win.

Jason Wiemer scored Minnesota's only goal and Manny Fernandez made 26 saves in 28 chances for the Wild, who have not won in six games (0-2-4).

Minnesota got on the board first midway through the opening stanza. Pascal Dupuis came out from behind the net in the offensive zone toward the right boards. He spun and put a shot on net that deflected off Sauve, then off Wiemer in front and into the net.

But a pair of second period power-play goals gave Colorado the 2-1 lead heading into the third.

Selanne scored his 11th goal of the season at the 4:51 mark to tie things up. Selanne controlled the puck behind the net, looking for a pass out in front. Finding none, he brought it out himself to Fernandez's left and backhanded the puck off the netminder's shoulder and into the net.

Less than five minutes later, Alex Tanguay zipped a pass from the top of the right circle to Forsberg cruising toward the net. Before he crossed behind the net, Forsberg fed Hejduk moving from the slot toward the red line, and he beat Fernandez over the left shoulder from a tough angle.

Marian Gaborik had a great scoring chance with around 6:30 left in the third, when he went in on an odd-man rush and had two whacks at the puck in close. Sauve, though, stood tall to the task.

Forsberg added an empty-net tally after intercepting a pass at the Wild blue line and wristing it into the net with 45 seconds to play.
