NHL Game Summary - Buffalo at Toronto
(Saturday, January 3rd)
Final Score: Toronto 3, Buffalo 3
Toronto, ON (Sports Network) - Matt Stajan scored with 3:02 left in regulation to earn the Toronto Maple Leafs a 3-3 tie with the Buffalo Sabres at Air Canada Centre.
Mats Sundin and Gary Roberts also netted goals for the Leafs, who saw their winless streak extended to four games (0-2-2). Ed Belfour faced just 16 shots, stopping 13 of them.
Miroslav Satan, Chris Drury, and Rory Fitzpatrick tallied for the Sabres, who are now unbeaten in three contests (2-0-1). Martin Biron made 34 saves for Buffalo.
The best scoring chance in overtime came when Belfour slid across the crease on his back to rob Dmitri Kalinin's one-timer from the left circle on a two- on-one rush.
The game also featured a scary moment in the first minute of play when Toronto right winger Owen Nolan was clipped near the eye by a high stick from Jay McKee. Nolan headed to the hospital for stitches and was met there by an eye specialist for further examination.
Stajan's goal was initially credited to Ken Klee on a shot from the point, but after further review, it was determined to deflect off Stajan's skate on the way in.
Roberts got Toronto on the board first with his 16th of the season 6:52 into the opening period. He took a lead pass at the blue line from Sundin and skated in all alone to beat Biron.
Buffalo answered back with three straight goals. Satan scored from the right circle five minutes into the second after Jochen Hecht followed up his own rebound and sent it across to Satan for his 15th of the year.
Drury made it 2-1 less than two minutes later when his wrist shot from the right circle beat the glove of Belfour, who was screened by Curtis Brown in front.
The Sabres got an insurance marker when Sundin shanked a clearing attempt from the front of the net. Fitzpatrick gloved it down and fired a wrist shot from the top of the slot to beat a surprised Belfour through the legs.
Sundin redeemed himself with a power-play tally early in the third frame to make it 3-2. Bryan McCabe threaded a beautiful feed across the slot to Sundin at the right of the goal mouth for the easy tap-in.
Satan has a three-game goal-scoring streak with five goals in that span...Drury has two goals and two assists in his last three games... The Maple Leafs are 9-0-1-1 in their last 11 at home...The home team is 16-1-5 in the last 22 meetings. The only road win in the series over that span was a 3-2 decision for the Leafs on November 15, 2002.
