Chicago, IL (Sports Network) - Michael Leighton made 20 saves for his second shutout in three games, lifting the Chicago Blackhawks to a 3-0 victory over the Detroit Red Wings at the United Center.
Nathan Dempsey, Tuomo Ruutu and Deron Quint scored for the Blackhawks, who won for the second time in three games and improved to just 3-13-4-3 in their last 23 outings. Tyler Arnason notched two assists in the victory.
Leighton, who blanked St. Louis five days ago, was not busy until the third period. He stopped just five shots in each of the first two periods, then turned aside 10 in the third to preserve his third career shutout.
Manny Legace made 24 saves for Detroit, which is 1-2-1 in its last four. The Red Wings were shut out for the third time this season and for the second time in as many road games.
The Blackhawks took a 1-0 lead with 4:24 left in the opening period on Dempsey's fifth goal of the season. Dempsey picked up the puck from Kyle Calder in the right circle and slipped a shot past Legace.
Chicago cashed in on a power play with 1:36 to play in the second for a 2-0 edge. Ruutu was creating traffic in front of the crease and was credited with his third goal when Arnason's shot caromed into the net off his leg.
Ruutu had a chance to extend the Chicago lead late in the third on a power play, but Legace made a diving save to keep it a two-goal game.
The Blackhawks eventually scored on the same man-advantage when Quint's one- timer from the top of the slot slipped past Legace on the stick side for his first goal of the season.
The Red Wings still lead the season series, 3-2-0. The clubs will meet for the final time this season on January 14 in Detroit...The Blackhawks were 2-for-8 on the power play and killed off each of Detroit's six chances with the extra skater.
