NHL Game Summary - Tampa Bay at Boston
(Tuesday, December 23rd)
Final Score: Tampa Bay 1, Boston 1
Boston, MA (Sports Network) - Andre Roy's goal in the opening minute of the third period lifted Tampa Bay to a 1-1 tie with Boston at the FleetCenter.
Nikolai Khabibulin made 21 saves in net for the Lightning, who have won just three of their last 15 games (3-9-3) and are 1-5-1 over their last seven.
Rob Zamuner scored for the Bruins, who are unbeaten in their last 19 games against Tampa Bay at home (14-0-5). However, they have won just twice in their last 16 games overall (2-7-6-1).
Andrew Raycroft turned aside 31 shots for Boston, and was nearly perfect aside from Roy's tough-angle goal in the third period.
Tampa Bay head coach John Tortorella benched star forward Vincent Lecavalier during the second period, sparking a war of words after the contest.
"He's got to start playing in the team concept. I don't care who he is or who he thinks he is," Tortorella said.
"I'm just going to keep playing hard. If I get benched for it, that's fine," Lecavalier said.
The Bruins carried a 1-0 lead into the final stanza, but Roy's first of the season knotted the score just 16 seconds into the period. He accepted a pass from Dmitry Afanasenkov in the right corner and fired a shot on net. Roy was even with the end line when he took the shot from a difficult angle, but the puck found its way through Raycroft's legs and into the net.
Boston had the best opportunities in overtime, but Khabibulin was equal to the task. A flurry midway through the period ended with a nice rebound opportunity for Mike Knuble in front, but he was stoned by the Tampa goaltender.
The Bruins applied some good pressure just seconds later, but crafty tic-tac- toe passing ended without a shot being taken, much to the chagrin of the FleetCenter crowd.
Khabibulin and Raycroft turned aside two shots apiece in overtime.
After a scoreless first period, during which Raycroft made 10 saves, Zamuner tallied 4:18 into the second to give the Bruins a 1-0 lead. P.J. Axelsson tested Khabibulin with a shot from the right circle, and Zamuner dove for the rebound on the left side, scoring top-shelf with a flip shot for his second of the season.
Axelsson registered his 100th NHL assist on the play
Boston is 3-0-2 in its last five meetings with the Lightning...Both teams were 0-for-1 on the power play...The Bruins are 0-4-4 in their last eight home games, their longest winless streak at home since the 1999-2000 season.
