NHL Game Summary - Los Angeles at Vancouver

Vancouver, BC (Sports Network) - Jarkko Ruutu scored to even the game late in the third period as the Vancouver Canucks rallied to tie the Los Angeles Kings, 4-4, at GM Place.

Zigmund Palffy scored two goals for the Kings, who are unbeaten in their last four games (1-0-3). Luc Robitaille added a goal and an assist for Los Angeles, which is just 1-5-3 in the last nine meetings against the Canucks.

Kings goaltender Cristobal Huet made 40 saves, while Dan Cloutier turned away 24 shots for Vancouver.

The Canucks fell behind, 4-1, but scored three unanswered goals to force overtime. Vancouver scored twice in a 33-second span late in the second period to get within one. Brent Sopel, who had gone 24 games without a goal, beat Huet with a high shot from the right circle at 17:31 to cut the Kings' lead to 4-2. Sopel's second goal of the season came on a power play.

Artem Chubarov took a pass from Ruutu, who was behind the Los Angeles net, and beat Huet to the short side with a shot from the right circle at 18:04 to pull Vancouver within a goal, 4-3.

Ruutu stole the puck from Kings defenseman Mattias Norstrom along the boards in the Los Angeles zone, moved toward the net and jammed the puck under Huet with 3:54 remaining in the third period to tie the game.

Alexander Frolov had the best scoring opportunity in overtime, but Cloutier made a pad save on the shot from point-blank range.

Todd Bertuzzi's power-play goal, his ninth of the season, gave Vancouver a 1-0 lead at 6:04 of the opening period. Los Angeles answered with four straight goals to take a three-goal lead.

Frolov scored with the Kings shorthanded to even the contest at 1-1 at 8:14 of the opening frame. Robitaille's power-play goal at 13:20 of the first period gave Los Angeles a 2-1 and the Kings held on for the one-goal lead after 20 minutes of play.

Los Angeles scored midway through the second period to take a two-goal advantage. Jozef Stumpel's shot from the blue line was re-directed on goal by Robitaille. Cloutier made the save, but Palffy fired home the rebound for a 3-1 lead at 12:32 of the middle stanza.

The Kings scored their second short-handed goal of the game to open a 4-1 lead. Palffy stole the puck at the Kings' blue line and headed up ice on a breakaway. He faked a shot to get Cloutier moving and slid a backhander between the netminder's legs at 16:40 of the second period.

Bertuzzi, who had 25 power-play goals last season, notched just his third of the year in the first period...The Canucks, who have gone to an extra session in 12 of their last 18 games, are 6-2-6 in overtime this season. The Kings are 1-3-4 in overtime...Chubarov had gone 20 games without a goal...Palffy has a seven-game point streak (6g, 4a)...Vancouver improved to 2-0-3 in its last five home games. All five have gone to overtime...The Canucks finished 2-for-5 on the power play after going 0-for-19 in their previous five games...LA was 1-for-3 with the extra skater.
