NHL Game Summary - Boston at New York Rangers
(Monday, December 22nd)
Final Score: NY Rangers 4, Boston 2
New York, NY (Sports Network) - Petr Nedved netted two goals en route to a 4-2 victory for the New York Rangers over the Boston Bruins at Madison Square Garden.
Bobby Holik also had two goals for the Rangers, who have won two of their last three contests to get back to .500 (13-13-5-2). Darius Kasparaitis added two assists while Mike Dunham stopped 31-of-33 shots, including a marvelous save in the final stages for the win.
Patrice Bergeron scored and also assisted on P.J. Axelsson's goal for the Bruins, who have now dropped three straight and have won just two of their last 15 (2-7-5-1). Andrew Raycroft made 25 saves, including two on breakaways.
After coming on in the final minute as the extra attacker, Bergeron was robbed by Dunham, who was out of position after stopping a shot by Nick Boynton. Bergeron was looking at a wide open net but Dunham stuck out his right skate at the last second to deflect the puck wide.
The Rangers then took control of the puck and Holik scored an empty-netter for his second of the game to seal the victory.
Bergeron opened the scoring with a power-play goal less than six minutes into the opening stanza for his seventh of the season. Brian Rolston chipped the puck away from Nedved as he looked to clear it, and it went right to Joe Thornton in the slot. His quick shot was stopped by Dunham, but Bergeron was left free on the doorstep to put home the rebound.
Holik's eighth of the year tied it five minutes later, as he worked hard to get free from the check of Boynton in front to slam home a loose puck. After the original shot by Kasparaitis hit the post, the puck was lying in the slot before squirting free to Holik.
Nedved gave the Rangers a 2-1 lead 1:46 later when he wristed one top-shelf through a screen to beat Raycroft to the stick side for a power-play tally. Boris Mironov fed the puck across to Nedved for his eighth goal on the year.
Nedved scored again 1:26 into the second period to give the Rangers a 3-1 cushion. Nedved skated from behind the net to score on a turnaround shot after taking a feed from Kasparaitis at the right hash mark.
Axelsson's breakaway goal, his third tally of the year, got it back to 3-2 late in the period. Axelsson streaked through the middle of the ice to get behind the defense and beat Dunham high to the stick side after taking a lead pass from Bergeron.
Rangers winger Jan Hlavac recorded his 100th NHL assist on Nedved's second goal of the game...Coming into the game, Dunham had allowed three goals or more in six of his last nine starts...Dunham improved to 6-1-0 lifetime against Boston.
